I know its individual preference....
Over the weekend, I met few modeller at the hobby shop and we had an interesting discussion on the airbrushing, weathering technique...
But I keep hearing this comment " I don't do modern".....about 5 different times.....
Now what wrong with modern ??? Or what right with WWII ???

Nothing is right or wrong with either.
WWII modeling is still the most popular, esp. German subjects. WWII is also produced in more abundance than other eras. It seems to sell better, esp. in Japan.
Modern is growing steadily. More and more modern kits are coming out every year. It will probably never catch up to the WWII genre though.
As you stated, it is each individual's preferance. Build what you like and don't worry about what others are building.

maybe because of the diversity of the subjects in the WWII era-especially the Germans. It's not every day now that we see a tank that is jigsaw puzzled with the other. I still prefer modern over past 'casuse...
hmmm....
I dunno. maybe because I feel its superiority over the ones in the past and I like superior things! They also look a lot cooler (oh man that last statement's gonna have about 50 people hot on my tail)

as its been said, its definitely personal preference. To ask what is wrong or right with modern is like asking whats wrong with red when there is blue colours.
Ask me and i could probably tell you that i DO modern 5 times.
There are alot of excellent campaigns coming up next year so enlist for those. I started the Modern Armor campaign but like Klaus mentioned, the M113 campaign is another excellent idea which im definitely enlisting up for.
Check it out!

Hi
personally I only do modern and as you stated it it's a question of personal choice.
Have nice holidays (with a lot of time modeling modern armor :-) )

I've built a couple of WWII Axis kits but got tired of painting Pz IV roadwheels and sold the WWII kits and do strictly modern now.

Some people are just prejudiced when it comes to what they model. Having modeled WWII for about a dozen years, I gave modern a go - and I'm not going back any time soon. I like trying to mirror what I see on the net, etc. And now with the up-armored and up-gunned HMMWVs and trucks - its a scratch builders paradise.
So keep your zimmerit covered ambush camo'd Tiger II's - Its M1A1 HA's, M2A2's and LAV's for me.

There's nothing wrong with any model.
But the draw to WWII is that this was the era of the most technological breakthroughs in Tank design.
Just think in five years we went from the Panzer 1 to the King Tiger. The US military did not have Tanks as a main arm of the forces and where toying with idea.
The British went from Matildas to the Comet ( the Tiger copy ) (yeah I know, the Panther was the T34 Copy and the T34 was based on an American design)
It's just such an interesting age in tank technology.
I've built a M113.....(one) someday I'd like to build an Abrams.....or that Lepard A2 Australian version
Gaz

Maybe the WWII era seems more 'romantic' if you know what I mean... Technology was advancing, but it was still a lot rawer then...

As has been said already WW2 is the main interest area for most people.
Also modern does not sell in the far east.
Its the same old thing, manufacturers will only produce kits of subjects that sell(or they perceive will sell)
If they produced new modern kits then more people would start building modern, but since they think a rehash of panzerkrapwagen 13 & 1/2 will sell more they wont bother.
Hmmm, nomination for the most rediculous statement of the year?

I myself have built "OLD" and New armor as well as soft skin, Now I have been building mostly new from Vietnam to present. With the war in the sand maybe more new Kits will come out with some of the lates stuff. I like the new 5 ton and the cool Dump truck the Marines brout over with a back hoe on the front. Some day would love to get the newest dozer tank they used to go through the burms. I have built the Merkava, M1abrams, M113, Lepord 1, 1a, ect. M60a1 and numerous soft skin Like the Hummer and Bigfoot. Love AFV's stuff with Tamaya and Dragon a very close 2nd and 3rd.

The Comet was designed after the Tunis Tiger was captured and sent to england for evaluation some of the features of the tiger were used in the design of the comet... hence ( tiger copy) not exact tiger duplicate. Just like the way people around the world say that the panther was a copy of the T34 because the similarities are there to be compared.
Why are you people so quick to jump and attack someone for repeating things that have been said before?
Instead of attacking people with the rediculous statements like the one you made, show some proof as to why you claim my statement is rediculous.
Does a person have to write a marathon post everytime he wants to make a statement that in a normal english speaking society can be said in two words.

WW2 went on for many years so tons of pics and history involved. The troops and vehicles had "personality and ingenuity."
Modern had that little skirmish in ODS for 100 hours and more recently action in OED and OIF. Now the modern has seen extended combat, I'm, sure there will be more reference materials and stories to go around.

personaly its just an interest, i like old people and old things :-) The fact im a history lover makes me enjoy a lot about ww1 and ww2, vietnam or korea althought i only have built ww2 for now. my history teacher has said at the begining of the year soemthing that will say why i don't have the same interest in modern. you can only analize what happened years and years after it has happened... example... how long did it take to realy figure out what really happened politicaly in ww1?
i do plan on building armour soon enought, but i doubt il have the same interest.

I think that there is nothing wrong with showing a preference for either genre. Although I am a modern fan and thus at times disappointed when I see 30 WWII kits at my shop in Raleigh and ony 5 or so (if I am lucky mordern armor kits). It is a fact that since I've come to this hobby have learn to accept. I personally find inspiration when I see some of my fellow modelers complete modern kits and dioramas. It leaves a lot of room for scratchbuilding.
