The first one was a photoshopped image from early in the war. The tank lost one of it's return rollers and had to be abandoned due the speed with which the war was being conducted.. It was therefore destroyed by it's crew to keep war materiel from falling into enemy hands. Notice the machine guns are missing, as is the muzzle reference sensor, which are things that the crew removed before abandoning it. The rpg gunner was photoshopped in well after the fact.
The second happened at night, the driver got a little to far to one side of the road and the tank was pulled into the ditch.
I hadn't seen the third one so I have no idea. The guy might have hit a parked tank or not been able to stop in time because it was raining.

Destroy an Abrams MBT (cost howmany millions) because of the loss of a return roller (cost what? $1000??)?? . If you're fighting an enemy that works to such economics you'd might as wel go home.... :-) .
Reminds me of the old joke of the Arab sheiks buying a new Mercedes if the ashtray was full... :-) .

Seems not logical the tank could have hit the car as I guess there wouldn't be much left of the car then anymore.
Of course a tank is hard to spot all exposed in the middle of a road Perhaps they were testing new US army invisibility equipment on the tank

No worry henk, its a goverment strategy to have a better economy. by destroying it, they need to order a new one, which assures jobs for the population...
Why is there a third cable in the second picture? are they having a rope pulling contest? 2vs1 seems a little unfair :-) :-)
3rd pic im guessing the iraki wanted to go one on one with the abrams in a demolition dirby

Why is there a third cable in the second picture? are they having a rope pulling contest?
The one rope is pulling, the second rope is keeping the other end in a much better alignment, and preventing the front from sliding further down the pit, it will be played out, as the rear one is taken up, or vice verser, the side rope, is there to prevent a tip over or slide slip, if one of the other cables part. The pit does have one hell of an incline.
Didn't the Germans scuttle the Admiral Graf Spee so it didn't fall into British hands? Same principle.

I really like the M88 in the second picture with its spade in the lowered position for support.

Regarding the second picture again, I am pretty sure that the M88 pictured is doing the major pulling. It looks like the cable has been payed out to a snatch-block pulley(out of sight) and then returned to the front of the M88. This increases the pulling power of the winch significantly. So it stands to reason that it is doing the most pulling in this recovery.

The hilarious thing about the 3rd photo is that you dont see a single scratch or dent on the tank.
Caption for the 3rd photo should be:
"Look mate, they told me this car was built like a tank....those lying bastids!"

Actually, the story (actually more of a one line explanation) with the third pic can be seen on Don Busack's Prime Portal here. Also a great place if you need any more ref pics.
