Hi guys,

I'm working on a new figvignette now. But I need a little help over here...
I don't realy like the barbwire fence...Maybe I could do something else, but I don't know what... Any ideas?

At the telegraphpole (1:1 = 8meters -> 1:35 = 228mm) will be a sign with the name of a village... I'm working on that... Where my 2 figs will be, will come a large grassy area. With flowers and stuff

Any help is welcome over here!

Cheers

It looks good so far overall.
If you want my 2 cents on the fence -here they are: cent 1 - I would move the lower wire up about .25 inches. I don't see a fence to keep catle in as having the low wire so low - usually 1/2 way down.
2 - I would get them as straight as possible - barbed wire is usually very tight in this style fence.

I think adding a dark brown/black wash will really help the visual of the wire.

Ok - second look - I would put the pole out the outside of the wire (cobble side). A fence like this - I'm assuming this is one to keep animals in - would be for a private owner. The pole would be a 'public works' thing and while it may be used on a fence I think the owner would have put his wire on the inside.

If you want a totally different idea - use a wooden pickette fence.

If that's supposed to be road surface, it loks to me that the wire is too close. At least here, when people use barbed wire, it's set back from the road several meters.
I like the insulators on the telegraph pole a lot. However, I think this is going to cause a great deal of visual confusion. Even with a sign on it, your going to have a huge area of dead space with nothing to look at between the action and the top.

So, Shorten the Pole and take the barbwire to the side of the field.
I shall see what that would give...
How about a bush around the pole?

I agree, the insulators look dead on, great. The pole its self should be about 25 feet with about 5 feet in the ground , so around 175mm sticking out of ground. also the "cross arm " is way to small to support the wire , plus the top should not be "sharpened" , 2 simple angle cuts at the top to a point or just flat , both are exceptable. 1 last thing, the pole would be ok to put there if it was a military comp. line, but don't attach the barbed wire to it ,(the army doesnt care about the fence).

(I'll see if I can find pics)

Look forward to the finished dio.

Rats, the site I was thinking of is no longer available, I did find this: looks like this pole is closer to 25ft out of the ground, and has a different configuration on the insulators.

Vignettes are sometimes hard to do coz you usually have a few figs trying to tell some story and a fair bit of empty space in between. In this vig you've got a well made telephone pole but personally I think it over-powers your vignette.

Since it appears to be a dynamic vig would it be possible to have 1 more figure jump over the fence thus drawing attention back to the figures. Having a figure coming from the cobblestone side and attempting to cross the fence will solve your dead space as well. Just a thought.

The wire looks great, but IMO, the 'barbs' seem out of scale. I would make those about half the length of the ones you currently have and I would use a thinner gauge wire. Looks like your scene is going to be interesting!

I know that on this side of the pond you will normally find a three strand barbed wire fence used to keep cattle in. A third strand in the middle of the two existing should work. Scott is right about the tension. Unless posts are knocked loose, or lots of people have climbed on the wire, the strands should be really taunt. I've strung lots of barbed wire on my Grandfather's farm over the years.

I really like the idea behind what you've started here.
Please don't take this wrong but I think all of the wires look out of scale. Much too thick. Also my experience with barbed wire is the barbs are spaced about the width of the palm of your hand. Yours look to be about twice that.

Gary

Hi y'all

thanks for the many replies.
I've shortend the pole now... Still high, but not that high.
The barbwire's removed.Someone at Twenot showed me a picture of another fence that's used in holland... to keep sheep in. Nowaday it's used in the garden.

So I'm working on this one and let me hope it will come out real nice...
I'll keep you updated when the changes are done... I also will thinner the wires...

Cheers

Okay,

I have a really basic question. How much barbed wire was used to keep animals in corrals in Europe or Russia during WW2? I am asking because I honestly don't know. I thought barb wire fencing was pretty much of an American thing.

Anyone?

One suggestion, though. I think I would cut the top of the pole of at a right angle. The point doesn't look quite right to me.

Keanan,
As I look here at my place (I live in the outskirts of a village) the barbwire is only 1 wire and between 0,5m and 1m high. The poles are from concrete... But I've seen some in wood too... A little further the barb wire's with 2 wires and also max a meter high (for cattles) and some further 3 wires and max 130cm... So you see, not that high...

I'm working now on that sheepfence and I got to say, I did not know with what I've begun. So much later and I've got 3 sicks ready... That's 1cm... And I've got to do 6cm... Hell, it will take a long time But I think the result will be outstanding

I also will look for a better picture than this one:

to check the different configuration on the insulators. This is more one for the field, don't you think?

Cheers

Wes,
I like the new fence.
Good texture and the verticle lines compliment the pole.
Good job!!!!
