Try to not use plain grey on more than a few stones. Most stones tend to go towards other colours like red, blue or yellow.

Oh Man, Andreas, I was going to say paint grey! LOL :-) that's what I normally do, is paint a dark grey paint, and then I add a wash, followed by different colours of drybrushing.
