Of significance to me is the amount of care taken to the wrecks with human remains. A constant reminder that the Russian people paid the most for our freedom.

Thanks for the links. Some very interesting stuff, especially the restoration of the German halftrack.

Great pictures indeed. It's one thing to build historical models, but to get to excavate history like that must really be something else entirely. It gives one a perspective of the whole thing, and maybe ensures that we as a species don't forget.

Hard to believe that some of them are in that good of shape still. It is amazing how well mud and swamp can preserve armour.
Thanx for the links.

Very fascinating!Love that recovery stuff. Not real sure of any advantage to go after a tank in a pond,in the dead of winter, but it was mission accomplished.
Thanks Frank

WOW amazing..all this years they're just buried waiting to be found. some were almost in perfect condition..all you need is to clean and start the engine. talk about WWII archeology.

We can keep our fingers crossed that sooner or later they take a KV2 out of one of these swamps and clarify once (and for all) internal turret details....Jim

You said the right word, incredible. It's amazing how even some of the rubber tires were still looking good 60 years on. Can you imagine the history that is burried out there that they haven't yet found?

I've seen it several times to think it is common to let the lake freeze over so you can use normal equipment and use the thickness of the ice to help in the recovery. Especially if the lake or pond is remote, getting the proper equipment there is most likely more expensive than the whole endeavor in the dead of winter...

I have to agree with Brian. The only time you would be able to get at alot of those swampy areas would be winter. If you went in the summer your heavy equipment would end up just as buried as the WW2 era tanks! In the oil industry up here in canada we have what's called a winter drilling season, where many parts of the remote north are only accesable by winter roads and over frozen lakes etc and its the only time of year big equipment can get into and out of swampy/boggy areas. Seems like in the 40's alot of tankers tried to cut through these spots in summer time and never got out, HAHA!!!

Yea that's cool. A lot of those pics come from the site http://ww-2.com/ Very neat site but it's in Russian. They excavate all kinds of war atifacts including dead soldiers. It's a trip!
