I've came across this one on
http://www.flickr.com . I am wondering what is the device strapped on the top of the storage box. I'm inclined to think that it has maybe something to do with engineer stuff, as this M113 appears to belong to an engineer unit ( there are some traffic cones strapped on the back). Any info would be welcome

I've been in Engineer units for 18 years so I thought I may be of some help. But, the picture is to dark to make out any details of what the object maybe.

No engineer but it looks like some type of hard black rubber roller. It reminds me of a tail pulley on the big conveyor belts we have here at the foundry.

Nice reference pic for gear stowage. The hi-res one is great.

I don't think that it is, but the end towards the front of the track somewhat resembles the back end of a Dragon AT missile launcher.
And it sure is a great study in on-board stowage!

I think it is a Javelin in its packing case.

I lightened it up a bit for better definition. I still don't know what it is.

I think Burik is right. I've not seen them in the packing like that, but the end caps sure look right, in addition to looking to be the correct length.

The dumb "Grumpy" guess is one of the new type fuel bladders they push over the side and drive over to fill up they fuel tanks.

Nope, it's not a Javelin.
I doctored the pic some, and used my zoom function on my mouse, and it's solid with thick ribbing, and has dirt stuck to it......My guess is some sort of unditching apparatus that's wedged under the track in soft sand, or an attachment for a Pearson Mine Clearing System.
I work with a guy who was an engineer, so I'll ask him on Monday if he knows what it could be.

Can you contact "TaylorC"? This member might know what they took a picture of, or be able to get in contact with one of the crew in the picture to describe it's function.
I don't know.
but now I'm interested.

Here is a clearer close-up of the still unidentified object :

I still think it is a Javelin. I'll bet Gino's next paycheck on it. :-) :-) :-)
My guess is that ribbed thing is a rubber packing which is designed to protect the hardware and whatnot which is much more sophisticated than the old dragon. It's too small to be a fuel bladder, and to my knowledge the Army did not carry fuel bladders around like the Marines did on individual vehicles.

The rubber packing is why I'm baffled. Never seen it. The guidance unit doesn't even come with anything like that, and it's the more sensitive component. Still, I can't think of anything else it could be.
Lockheed Martin has a missile division not far from my home inTexas, where I have fairly good access. Maybe I can ask when I return to Texas.

I'll bet my next pay it's not a javelin. It looks like maybe half of a mine roller rig? definately looks more like a logistical piece of kit as opposed to part of a weapon system.
Be interesting to find out what it is.

Could I say it is nothing to do with the APC equipment, but maybe something foraged in the field for whatever reason?

Ah well, honestly when I first saw the smaller pic without my reading glasses I thought it was a smoker. I say this only because I know a guy who jumped a barbecue grill once. I myself have jumped a b&w TV.

Nope not a TOW either, although the length is almost correct.
TOWs BTW are shipped in wood crates
