I think what you are looking for is "bales of straw" (Strobalen).

Or "Hay Bales" used to make "Haystacks" Were balers in use in this time frame? I don't know, I'm not a farmer. I guess we used them in Britain around WWII time, but my memory of European photos is of piles of hay not formed into "formal" bales.

Incidentally you very rarely see the older rectangular Hay Bales nowadays, the modern balers just churn out huge round bales which are then covered in black plastic.

Here in Holland the so called hay bales the square rectangular ones are still very commonly used by farmers. The round sealed ones you also see very much here
As I live in the country side of Holland I spend A lot of my youth working in flowerbulbs and other type of farms like cattle farms
I also have worked a lot as baler and from what I heared from older people (farmers born or working during WW2) was that the square ones already were used in the days but they weren`t made with machines then. It was a long lastin process were they had wooden crates that they filled with hay and then put pressure on it in some way.
I have asked for this reference because I wanted to do a dio on a dutch farm place somewhere in the neighbourhood of Arnhem.

Plasticbattle,

The roof I describes to Danny was rusted and it makes sense.
New roofs are relative smooth and seeds don't have much to hold on, when rust is formed they create a uneven surface in which seeds can find a grip and start to grow, nature is very resourceful at this.
