Now I´m going to work in a "new" Vietnam diorama, about a OH-6 scout helo been ambushed by a NVA machine gun nest while the scout is firing to a group of running NVA. (I send soma pictures of OH-6 and NVAs in july 2005).
Comments about the coconut palms look ?????
Comments about the layout of the dio ????
The pictures are made for getting an idea about the "look" of the dio and his elements.
Thanks in advance¡¡¡

Looks good to me. Should come out nicely. Are you going to have the MG position hidden in some brush or something. If not, I would assume the OH-6 would be engaging it as opposed to the guys running. Looking forward to seeing it develop. Keep us posted.

Yes Gino, the machine gun nest was in a hidden position, so it´s a "little" surprise for the scout ...
Thanks for yours comments.

The palm fronds are really good. I would offer that you do a filter of a darker green to give them a tint variation. Maybe add a bit of brown on the ends of a few to make them look older.
Composition is solid and spacing very well done.

The palm trees look great.the dio looks very promising!keep up the good work .Btw you might want to change the position of the brances of the palm tree a bit due to the air flow of the helo. How large is it going to be?

Coming along nicely Csago. I think Scott has covered the coconut fronds (leaves) so I have just a small comment on the trunks. It might just be the photos but the trunks appear a bit too smooth. Coconut trunks have rings throughout the whole trunk which are quite visible. This is rings are a result of what's left after the coconut frond drops off due to old age. I have some closeup pics in an article I wrote in the Feature forum under Dioramas (Jungle section) if you need some reference.
I assuming the trunks are not painted as well as trunks tend to vary between light brown and flat earth colors. I guess you will be bending the fronds downwards more to simulate the downwash from the heli.
The layout looks interesting thus far.

I like it! Everything all the subjects are so interesting. Those little scout helo's are awesome. I don't think I've ever seen the figure kit before.

hi there, i like everything in your project. just one nitpick. paint the ridges of your leaves(coconut) light green and darker green on the leaves. add some dried palm leaves just under the coconuts..out there in the jungle..coconut trees are alittle messy. the ones you seen on resorts were tended by farmers or gardeners. that's why they're clean underneath.
your's by far is convincing.. if you like i'll post some more pictures for reference.

Thank you very much, and yes, I´ll paint the palms with lights, shadows and filters; right now are just painted with a base of aerografic Vallejo acrilic.

Yes, the branches will be in motion by the airflow of the chopper; by now they are only put together with a bit of blue tack for pictures ...
And the dio will be 40 cm x 50 cms. Thank you very much for your comment

Of course I have in my PC your article about jungle plants ¡¡¡¡¡ It´s a very good reference for me ¡¡¡ But the trunks of the palms are just branches that will be just the base of the trunks... I´ll cover them with masking tape por painters, covered with diluited putty to "make" the tipical rounded sections of the real coconuts trunks; I have a lot of pictures of real coconut palms from Vietnam for reference ...
Thank you very much ¡¡¡

The branches are made with natural ficus benjamina leaves, cut to side, let aside for drying for 2-4 hours and painted with Vallejo acrilics for a basic paint.
And the NVA figures are from Dragon/DML "NVA Sappers" kit, with some changes of legs, bodies and arms.
Cheers.

Thank you very much. I have a lot of reference pictures of real coconut plantations in Vietnam during the war. In any way, thank you very much for yours comments, I take note of them of course.
Thanks again for the reference picture ¡¡¡¡

One quick point - having jumped out of helicopters in the past, I can tell you that the air stream of the craft would be whipping the palm fronds all over the place if the helicopter were that close to the tree.
Even at 30 feet above the ground, the grass and weeds below will be swirling around and beaten flat from the air blast.
Your palm fronds look wonderful... but if you are going for realism, then they shouldn't be so "still".... perhaps one or two palm trees in the distance with a normal appearance, while the one supporting the actual helicopter model would show the fronds beat down against the tree itself...? Just a matter of symantics... your work looks quite good!

Yes you are right, but the palm branches are put together with blue tack just for picture; when I´ll really make the palms the branches will be beaten by the airflow of the rotors, just as real thing... and the rice plants, and the water of the paddie, and the banana trees, everything will be beaten by the blast of the chopper ¡¡¡¡

This is going to be an AWESOME dio. You have barely started and it already looks great.
How long does it take to do a dio like this?
I can't wait to see it.

Well, I want to finish this diorama for march-april of the next 2007 year, just for the main spanish modelling contest Torrent Show. So I suppose it will take me about a year more o less. But you must know that I just can work on it only by late night (when it´s suppose I should be sleepping )
Thanks for your comments.
