I am going to suggest the method that Mig uses and details in his book 'FAQ'. You can just do the chipping in a very dark brown/black mixture, or in his method he paints some lighter grey marks, to contrast against the base colour and then to give a fried egg effect adds a touch of the dark black/brown mix, leaving a tiny outline of the light colour When complete this does give a very good scale effect. You just choose a lighter colour that contrasts with the base colour, which will be different on a dunkelgelb or olive drab base.

Hi Koen,
Here's a link to an article that will help you.
https://armorama.kitmaker.net//features/119
Some questions that will help you get the answer you want.
What vehicle are you painting?
What theatre of war is it set in?
Which season of the year is it going to be in?
Humbrol matt 70 is quite effective for red lead.
Hope this helps a bit - there are numerous articles and discussions about this topic on site - have a look in the Painting and Airbrushing section.
Cheers
Al

Here's a fuller article by MIG about chipped paint:

Know that there's lots of debate about the tendency for modeller's to do too much. Please consider if you want artistic and trendy look versus a probably more realistic look.
Personally, I think that the way that dust accumulates on AFVs and how it is worn off by the crew is much more realistic than dinging up paint.
