Well I am posting this in hopes of other people not making the same mistake I did.

Working on a BTR-80 by Dragon.....had the camo scheme painted, a coat of future over top...maybe the future was too thin.....mixed up my enamel wash, little bit of MM Classic Black, and a bunch of automotive reducer....thinking it is the same as thinner or turpentine....it worked really well at thinning enamels for airbrushing!!! After putting the mixture on some raised details with a small brush(learned on here not to use a large brush and cover everything with the wash...probably saved it), after about 5 mins...it looks as if the primer was showing through around the base of a search light....when I looked at the bow forging plane.....all of the paint had basically melted down and off, down to the primer.....wiped it off with a q-tip as best I could....but alas...will have to be repainted...and no doubt sanded as well.

So for those out there wanting to try this wash technique......don't use auto reducer as your thinning agent. Also since I had already ruined a portion of the paint job...I wanted to see if an alchol wash would affect the paint any...so I prepared a small amount and applied it to a small area...and sat back and watched the camo pattern mix into one color.....both of these washed ate through a coat of future, and through the paint.

BTW...the paint was Tamiya Acrylics, with the primer coat a testors enamel spray can of primer grey.

:-) Hi viper29_ca,
Been there done that, as they say. Take a look at my reply to Bytepilot, on the topic "Washes over matt paint". It certianly is learning the hard way. Nice of you to give a big heads up for that though. I hope everything turns out OK. Let us know how you get on.

Yeah.....all is well.....just wiped a couple of the spots off with a q-tip, mind you it was down to the primer!!...thank god that was enamel.....let everything dry....then fired up the airbrush again with some more balck to cover up the boo-boos. Little more black than I would like....but its not too bad. The other 2 colors were custom made...and didn't save any, so would have been a nightmare to try and match.

Now I just have to wait for the black to completly dry.....shoot another coat of future over it...and try another wash.

Going to go for one I read on PCmodler.com

Drop of dish det.
fill bottle with water
add a little acrylic paint

Tried this on the wheels with some Dark Brown Tamiya paint....and it looks ok.....not sure if I put enough paint in...as I can barely see any paint pigment on the wheels and turret.

Is this how its suppose to look? Or should there be a little more pigment left? If you paint the wash on a piece of paper towel...it barely colors the towel.....should be a little darker? Or is this OK?

Here is a simple reason why you shouldn't use an alcohol based wash over future : future is an acryilic... and alcohol disolves acrylics (such as tamiya paint) !
