Can anyone point me in the right direction as to which Churchill variants were used in North Africa?

IIRC (and according to several Internet sources ) Churchill Mk I, II, III and IV were used in North Africa.
Here's a Mk III in Tunisia :

...and a Mk IV in Egypt :

For what it's worth...

Both photos show Mk IIIs. The lower one is part of King Force, the small group sent out to evaluate the Churchill under tropical conditions.

As I'm no British AFVs expert at all, I had taken the caption on the AWM website for granted...

Mr. Gerry Chester, a veteran of the North Irish Horse that fought in Africa and Italy has his memoirs up. He served in every variant except the NA and the Mk VII I believe.

Go to "personal narrative"

He's revamping it personally so many of the links aren't working yet. It's a great read. Bookmark it and check back later.

Here's the article about how the Churchill NA 75 came about:

Those photos look good, any idea of the color of the two tones? I think I can "wing" one as a representative tank with those colors.

Rob,

The six Mk3s that made up 'Kingforce' were painted in the standard sand paint with broad hard edged strips across the entire vehicle. There is speculation as to whether the strips were black, green or brown, but from photos of the freshly painted vehicles it appears to be almost certainly black. The camo applied to the tanks appears to have been in quite a strict pattern

The churchill Mk 3 in frenchys picture is from 145 RAC, their tanks arrived in africa in the standard green, but they applied the elaborate patterns of sand with paint.

Some claim they used mud but in most photos it looks too smooth and even for that.

The types used in North Africa were;

Mk3 (initially by Kingforce, then used later by all churchill units)
Mk1 (reworked only)
Mk2(reworked only)
Mk4

any of the above marks could have been used together in the same units, often they appear together in photos.

If you need any photos of the kingforce churchills then drop me a PM, i try to scan them for you.
