There's Tamiya's kit of said vehicle, but it's very old and doesn't look good. I was wondering about converting Tamiya's regular Jeep kit into this vehicle, but how to go about it, or would it be worthwhile?

I would try one of the other Jeep models out there but use the Tamiya model for the 'K" guns and sand channels, suncompass ,jerry cans
I actually used the original tamiya jeep year ago when I was 16 and even tried to scatch build those guns -a very complicated little work in itself- enjoy and show us your work as it proceeds so that the very good modellers will be able to advise you on any changes before you go to far - Hope that helps

I made mine out of Italeri Commando Car (kit no.320) . It has Vickers' K and KO and is much better starting point than the Ancient tamiya jeep. You can get the air pattern browning from the Academy set of US MG's or use double vickers in front of passangers seat. Here's how mine turned out: http://armorama.kitmaker.net//features/941

Work of art Greg! Are the jerrycans Italeri? I'm gonna get stuck into one myself, when I have the time.

Tom, I know that a recent issue of Military Modelling magazine had an article on converting Tamiya's latest Jeep (kit No 35219). I'll post details, when I can.
However, as Greg has shown, the Italeri 'Commando car' can be made into a little masterpiece as well.

Should you use the Tamiya model I have a heap of Vickers K weapons.

Cheers!

I used the Tamyia Jeep, with the guns from the relic Tamyia SAS kit, jeep cans from Italeri, and sand channels cut down and reshaped from Accurate Armor. The gear is from the parts box.
Did this one a few years ago.

yeah, the old Tamiya SAS kit was what got me started in this hobby, and am tremendously sentimental about it, but to be honest, if i wanted to build an SAS jeep now i wouldnt really recommend that...
you dont want the jerricans from that set either, they are 2 handled and bad detail in the caps...
you can get a better MG from a load of other places, the academy set being a good one...
the things i do like about the kit are the accessories but even these you can get elsewhere...
the crew had some nice poses but is a bit soft on the detail in certain areas...

definitely go with the new tamiya jeep...
and get some aftermarket parts...

but if you're really tight on the budget why not give the old kit a go!

p.s. great stuff Greg and Dave! where are the figures from 'grumpy'?

I actually won an award with the old Tamiya SAS Jeep and a lot of work. I would start with the new Tamiya Jeep or the Italeri Commando Car and add the desert bits from the SAS Jeep.

Thanks for the kudos Jeff! Yes, the jerrycans in my Jeep are from the Italeri set, great value for money IMO. Most of the stowage comes with the Commando Car and the sand channels are scratchbuilds from aluminium foil, pressed and cut around channels from Tamiya LRDG Chevy

There's always the Verlinden set for the new Tamiya Jeep; it transforms the new jeep into an SAS jeep using resin and photoetched parts!
Cheers and happy modelling!

Verlinden makes a great conversion for the new Tamiya Jeep to convert to a SAS Jeep. It might still be available. It has all the necessary add ons to convert the nice Tamiya kit.

What exactly are 'sand channels'? What were they used for?

Sand channels were used to help get bogged vehicles out, they were simply put under / in front of the wheels. on the SAS Jeeps they were tied on the two spare wheels in the back, like on Grumpys or mine Jeeps.

Sand channels about to be used to unstick an LRDG Chevy. As you can see, it has sunk to the rear axle.

It was hard work for the unfortunate crew who got caught! First sand had to be dug away from the drive wheels, so that the sand channels could be pushed under them far enough to provide some purchase and act as a ramp. In the meantime the sand mats (normally rolled up and secured in the empty racks on the front fender) were unrolled and formed a bridge across the dodgy surface. If you look carefully, next to the right hand mudflap, you can just see the legs of the poor sod digging sand away from the wheel!

The sand channels were made from sections of PSP runway.

Wow! I didn't expect so much feedback on this one!

I'll probably get an aftermarket set to affix to the Tamiya jeep (which I already have.) Thanks for the info everyone!

Actually, after seeing the expense of the aftermarket kits, I decided on an alternative. What I actually intend to display, based on the story I read in the Osprey book on the LRDG, is a scene where an LRDG Chevrolet truck tows an abandoned and stripped SAS jeep, which has occurred at least a few times in North Africa. I'm using a Willys jeep, an Eduard SAS jeep PE kit, and may scratch the rest.

Interesting idea Tom, the LRDG prided themselves on rescuing abandoned SAS jeeps and, after some servicing, getting them back into operational service.

Check out the link on the LRDG under 'visit my selected link'.

Like the Diorama Miloslav - I'm going to have to get myself a jeep or two...

I've just been reading my New Vanguard book on the Long Range Desert Group and it mentioned both the SAS and LRDG had Willys jeeps. I thought of doing an LRDG jeep, but the book provided no pictures and little information on them. Does anyone have anything more? Also, were the configurations of weapons, etc. basically custoimized? Thanks.

Tom, the LRDG/SAS Jeep is one of the easiest subjects to find photo resources for on the net. A Google Image search on "lrdg jeep" could well be all you need.

Also have a look at LRDG: Long Range Desert Group 1940-1943 and the Imperial War Museum's online photo database (at http://www.iwmcollections.org.uk/ , choose "photographs" in the search menu at top right).

The weapons and equipment were largely customised, which is one of the great appeals of the subject.

Hi Tom

The LRDG jeeps were used as pilot cars for the chev patrols. Often the jeeps were recovered abandoned SAS vehicles which they repaired. I have seen photo's of Vickers 'K' guns fitted at the front, usually the back is full of stores/supplies etc.

This link is in French, but the info on weapons should be helpful.

http://souvenirsas.ifrance.com/souvenirsas/PgJEEPS.htm

This link will have you occcupied for a while as well.

Will scout around for some other files, hope this help[s for now.

AHHHRGH! My links aren't live on the page.

Would anybody be able to tell me how to make 'em live?

Thanks
