I use to use mostly tamiya figure kits for my models, but recently have started to use the dragon figure kits,I feel they are very detailed and the box art is very helpful.I have the IDF paratroopers and plan on adding them to a diorama .Currently I am deployed to camp Anaconda Iraq with the Army. I want to work on my figure painting skills durning my year over here. We recently started a club called the Anaconda Model Club,we are 10 members strong.Several of us are working on figures. Thanks for your support

Hi Till,
Hello to you and all your mates.
The Tamiya Paint number for Flat Fresh is XF -15 and would do as a base coat.
Vallejo make a nice range of different skin tones. I haven't tried them yet but I believe they are very good. Here's a link where you can check them out:

Dragon make some nice figures, you may want to take a look in the Figure Forum for further adivce and info:

Happy modelling and stay safe.

Hey Mauser. If you can brush paint tamiya ... I believe it has been rumoured a few can ... go fo it. But otherwise skip the tamiya paints for brush painting. For a base colour, mix some earth or brown into the skin tone, to get darker shadows.

I paint my WW2 American infantry with a mixture of paints, including Tamiya, with a brush. (I didn't realize that it was so difficult) For flesh I use Horizon flesh, which is available in different grades (I have a lot, but my LHS no longer carries it so I don't know if its still available.) BTW, I've just started using Tamiya weathering powders on faces to simulate 5 o'clock shadow. So far it works pretty well. I have tried the Modelmaster skin tones. I just can't get them to work for me, maybe others know a better way.

:-) Hey Till,
First of all THANKS for your service and that of your fellow soldiers.....STAY SAFE man!
Secondly...I use Tamiya flesh as well as the red brown or brown to shade. It really helps if you prime your figures first. You can use flat black..that way you have already pre-shadowed your figure. I am far, far, far from an expert on this subject but I just bought an Osprey book called "Modelling Waffen SS figures". The figures were painted by Calvin Tan and, though most are metal figures but the technique works on plastic, too....with good results. You can order Osprey books from Squadron Mail Order, Greatmodels, the Military Book Club, etc.
Also our own Mongo_Mel, Craig , could probably give you some very good pointers on painting figures.
Due to my occupation and the shift I work I don't have time to become the proficient modeller that I'd like to be..and figures have always been my downfall!
If there is anything that you can't obtain for your modelling needs (or non modelling needs!) while in Iraq, let us know...I'm sure between us we can help you guys out! My Step-Daughter is with the 3rd ID and has been to Iraq twice...I know there is ALWAYS something that you can't get while you're over there.
God Bless you and your comrades,
Jeff

You'll find EVERY recent DML figure release here, on Armorama. In fact you'll find very few on HF (unless they've been syndicated from here)...Jim

I hear ya Till, I recently started my first Dragon Premium kit, and cant say enough good things about it. Heres the one I started with:
I like that they put the extra heads in the kit, the detail is wonderful, and for once, i actually did a pretty decent job with the faces! I'd also concur with Al; get some Vallejo paints. I've got some paints that are like Vallejo, and they work better than trying to mix Tamiya paints. Also, you can control the ammount you use too, as they are in a bottle that you have to squeeze out what you need.
What's your address over there? I can afford to chuck a couple of dollars worth of paint y'alls way.

Greetings Till,
Welcome to the Kitmaker Network
While Armorama does indeed boast more DML kit reviews than Historicus Forma, we over at HF certainly can help you with those painting skills, which you said you will be working on over the next year - and thus I guess the crux of your post?
We have some great painting features using various mediums. You can check them out here: Historicus Forma Painting Features.
So pop on over to HFM for a cyber-beer, and share some modelling tales with us.
Hope to see ya there, all are welcome, and the more the merrier
Rudi
