Im getting close to the point of starting the base for my PzKpfw. IV Ausf D and i plan to make a sandy sort of small dune with an outpost, just a canopy with a few people and some supplies and the tank parked next to it. I could use a little help though:
Does anybody know how to create a good believable sandy effect? id like the lighter type of sand that you might see in the sahara, just to make it look nice rather than the browner dirty clay-ie looking sand in parts of North Africa.
Also if anybody has any ideas of things i could put under the tent/canopy, that would be very appreciated.
I plan to scratchbuild a canopy using a wire frame and draping paper tower over the top, but ive never really studied the North African theatre and i would appreciate all the pointers i can get.
Thanks
-Charles

Hi Charles,
You can pick up an appropriate scale sand at just about any hobby/model railroaders shop. It comes in various colors.
As far as what to put under the tent.......pretty much whatever you would like. Maybe a map table and some communications equipment. Any and all personal gear. Somebody catching a nap in the shade. Some water cans or just about anything.
I hope that this helps you out.

Thanks, it does. Quite a lot actually. With this being my first diorama, i really only know the theory and the ideas, but making it and knowing what materials to use is something else. javascript:PasteSmiley(':p')

Just remember that while there are dunes in the North Africa theater, the terrain is actually quite rocky in most areas so a liberal dosing of kitty litter and other small rocks is called for.

hi charles
i work at a home depot. for sand or dirt i use "sanded grout" sold in the flooring department. it comes in various colors and you can mix a couple to make your own colors. it's also cheaper then modeling sand. it comes in 7lb, 10lb or 25lb sizes. hope this helps

Ola Charles
Go to the pet store and buy the sand you would use for birdcages. Nice to scale, Cheap and a dollar probably would have you end up with a supply for a lifetime
