I had heard that the current moves were very political. Georgian politicians gave up a few bases in Atlanta (McPherson, Gilliam) but wanted the military population to remain the same (by increasing the population at Benning). Truthfully, it would probably be easier, cheaper and more efficient to move the Infantry School to Knox than vice versa.

Knox has ample room and resources for an armor brigade, but for some reason the Army has decided to stand up a light infantry brigade here.

I remember when 1st Cav turned in the Vulcans. It was when I was the BMO, probably around 1993. We stripped the heck out of them to get just about every other M113 FOV operational. It was around the same time that the ADA Bde (31st?) stationed at Hood transitioned from Hawk to Patriot missiles.

The old 4-5 ADA once 1CD now 31st ADA is here with Avenger and Patriot. I came here when the 5th moved from Polk to become the 2AD in 92 then it became the 4th we used to support 3rdACR when it was in Bliss wiht commo elements from the 3rd Sig. seems the train keeps moving donw the track either you ride or you get run over by it

In regards to the M6 Linebacker, what was the last unit to deploy to Iraq with the M6? I saw a short video where there was an M6 with the BRAT. Or did they just leave them in country to be rotated to other Bradley units since all they mostly need is the 25MM?

Believe the last to go with M6 was 1 Cav. Not positive, just I remember talking with the 1/64 guys that replaced us and they had completed most of the transition by that point.

Additionally, by Mar 2005, the Linebacker guys had been transitioned to 19D, according to Armor Branch.

So enough of the practical and historical stuff... I have an important question

WHERE are they going to put the Patton Museum? Can't leave it at Knox if the tanks go away

Ric,
5-7 Cav, 1st BDE, 3ID, the old 1-3 ADA, took their M6 Linebackers when we went in 05. They used them like M3s and ran the crap out of them in the Balad area. The M6s were turned over to AMC in Kuwait witht he rest of our M2A2ODS's to go into the Bradley Reset program. Their Avengers went to the Florida, South Carolina and a third Army National Guard unit in November 04 if you were wondering... The conversion of a SHORAD Battalion into a Cavalry Squadron was not one of the easier tasks to come out of the Modularity Conversion for 3ID.

The Patton Museum stays. It is privately funded and also acts as the post's historical museum.
