Here are some pictures of my Trumpeter Ariete.Kit was mostly OOB except for the some Eduard photoetch and a new barrel from royal models. Model was finished with Tamiya paint and weathered with oils.
thanks for looking.....Larry

Looks good Larry,
I've heard nice things about that kit, how did you find it?

That's a really nice build, an Italian Leopard 2! I might be out to lunch, but I see Leopard 2 in the Arties' details. Minor things like the similarity of the coupulas and right hand driver position. Was there any shared development between the two projects?

No shared development between the Leopard 2 and the Ariete.
The Ariete was developed strictly within the Italian Defence Industry. The main gun in German but built under licence in Italy.
The Ariete really can't compare in armour capability, or power to the Leopard 2.
Still, I think it looks pretty interesting with the add-on armour packages used in Iraq...this will be a future project for me.
Good job Larry.

I really like the looks of the ariete. It and the Canadian Leopard c1/c2 are some of my favorite tanks right now. Now if Trumpeter/AFV club and DML will release those Strykers I would be in heaven......

I always thought the Ariete looked like the illegitimate love child of a Challenger 1 and a Leopard 2 (that recessed gun mount is pure Challenger). The Germans did not help develop it, but OTO Melara did license produce the Leopard 1 for many years for the Italian Army, and the earlier OF-40 offered to the export market was a near knock-off of the German tank. And of course, Diehl tracks are nearly the industry standard for tanks and other AFV's these days--even the Chinese use them.
If you want real armor deja vu, check out almost any Japanese armor from the postwar period. They look remarkably like other countries' projects (not always American, either).

Hi Gerald,
Does it mean I can replace the original one piece track with an aftermarket Leo 1 track set?
Thanks,
Will

Wow! Fantastic one!
I'm Italian but I've never seen one of these beasts!
Great weathering, not excessive (did you make the mud with pigments+thinner?). What colour did you use for the green?

I'm kinda old school. My recipe for mud is Comet bathroom cleaner and gunze mud paint. Comes out great and easy to use not much of a mess.As far as paint I used Tamiya Nato green and mixed and matched to some photos. I think it came out very close to what colors are used on the Ariete....

No, you cant. The track is a unique design by Diehl for the Ariete. The end-conntectors are also a little different. They have some sort of 'duck-bills'.

Haven't ever found any aftermarket 23-inch track for the Leo 1, oddly enough. Lots of wider Leo 2 tracks available. In any case, the Ariete has the narrow track with a set of duckbill extenders on the outside edge instead of the wide tracks, and the kit tracks are the only ones available of that type. Only other vehicle to use this track I am aware of was the French AUF-1 155mm self-propelled howitzers on the AMX-30 chassis, as deployed to Kosovo.

Really nice model and a great job. I can only agree with the others: very good and convincing weathering.
