AJ:
I dunno about the modern 'loaded' Tamiya Panther, but the older basic wire-remote model is identical to the Academy one, to the point that you can swap any and all parts between the two.
Some of the modellers think Tamiya either sold off its worn mold w/ rights and Academy snapped it up, or Academy simply ripped it as happens a lot in the Asian companies (take the Hen Long 1/16 RC Tiger and 'Snow Leopard; for instance - way too close to Tamiya's RC's)
There are a bunch of these Tamiya/Academy instances, particularly among the 1/35 Shermans as well.
Last time i got the Academy, at just over $40 US from either HLJ or R10 (can't remember which) it was small toy gearboxes with wire control box, no other mechanicals/electronics.
Hope that helps.

Academy copied a lot of Tamiya stuff during their earlier days, changing things like sprue layouts and some small details, but the origin was clear.
Tamiya rarely let their moulds go out of their control.

Hi all,
I am pretty sure some of the initial releases from Acadamy was "borrowed" from Tamiya.
The later models from Acadamy - to me - look upgraded in quality whereas Tamiya hasenīt produced much in this scale for decades. The Jagdpanther Late and Panther G - you can see the Acadamy catalogue for the numbers to identify which ones are the later models - are very nice and Eduard or Aber do some nice set of grilles and clamps for these two Acadamy models. Especially the tracks looks very good.
Best regards
Morten

Houborg for both panthers A and G version and for jagdpanther only Aber makes Pe Kits.
Eduard produces Pe kits to Hasegawa `s willys Yeep.
The early panter A from Tamiya and Academy is the same outside .The really true difference is inside.I say about gear box and wire/remote controle system. This makes the pice difference too.
Panther G is mostly new kit.

ArmorJr:
The Academy unit I bought was the 1338 kit, and it had only the main tracks dual-motor gearbox. No traverse, no sound, nada.
The Bandai's have nothing besides a cheap set of gears unless you luck into one of the ancient original kits new-in-box. It was either the Tiger or Pz.4 that had gearboxes apart from the tracks, but those are rare as can be. Most of the ones found now have cheap stamped gears and NO motors (you supply your own)
You want bells & whistles, you have a few options:
- buy a Hen Long 1/16 smoke & sound, which aren't too bad these days, and have a selection of Tiger 1, Pantiger (Panther-tiger hybrid) M26 'Snow Leopard' (aka Pershing) M41A3 Walker Bulldog or perhaps wait for their Pz. 3 or the offshoot 'Matorro' Jadg-whatever.
- buy a 1/16 Wasan T34
- drop to 1/24 scale and get a VS or Marui unit
- buy one of the Tamiya 1/35 all-in one RC kits (hard to find but I know someone that has a few)
- or blow a whole wad and get a Tamiya 1/16 DMD/MF kit
That help you out?
