Hi Tony

I guessed what you were looking at after seeing the Feedback thread.

Picture isn't that great, even in the large version on Amazon, but it does look like there is something standing up to about the level of the co-driver's hatch. Time to look some more

As for colours, Shermans came in US Olive Drab and if they got repainted it was with SCC15, which is a similar colour, but more green.

Hullo all
Just picked up this beauty of a kit, but there is one thing that bugs the $h/t out of me... It is the 'recess' (for want of a better word) in the drivers' hatches for the periscopes... They are butt-ugly! I figure the majority of people would model their Sherman with at least one hatch open, and this is the side that looks terrible... Sure i like the idea of drop in periscope housings which can be rotated to suit, and look perfect when buttoned-up, but not at the expense of a reasonable looking underside of the hatch when displayed open...
Am I just being too picky?
Hmmm.....
this is the part I mean... The big rim to take the housing sits up far too high...

And here is a (blurry!) pic of the real thing

You're right about the hatch being "butt ugly". I bough the AM ones from Tiger Models and they are beautiful, and in my opinion well worth it. great photos in this thread. Thanks to all.

Thanks David. Olive drab it is. Got to scratch build me a sight now though Was not going to do it but on blowing up the photo there is something there and it has to be the second sight as shown in your photo.
Still curious about the 'thing' on the r/h/s/. It seems to be six sided as well!

Cheers
Tony

p.s. got to blow it right up to see sides on that thing,

About the picture - any information on date or place?

Was it taken during Operation Clipper during November 1944? The SRY supported the US 84th Infantry Division then, during the fighting around Geilenkirchen.

There's an SRY tank brassing up a German position with its coax in support of the 84th on this page

Tony, backtracking a bit, are you building an standard troop leaders tank or one from the squadron HQ troop? If it's a troop leader, then it's unlikely to have additional radio gear and should only have the standard A and B set aerials on the turret.

David,
He commanded No. 4 troop, C squadron. A Sabre squadron so it was not HQ.

Gday Guy
Have been eyeing off the tiger hatches for a while. They look a treat!
And I love it how the thread takes on a life of it's own. There are a few tangents, and each is full of info
Cheers

Two sighting vanes in closeup - the blade is the earlier one.

Hey David the new sight looks to be attached backwards? All the ones I have seen have had the taller part to the rear...?

Hey Tony I had a bash at it for my last M4, and whilst not super accurate, it looks the part from a distance!

Hi Brad

Looked at the pic several times yesterday and thought the PE one on my Firefly doesn't look like that.

Hi Tony

Still can't get the IWM database to work. However I did find the same photo in Ken Ford's book on the fighting around Geilenkirchen, not that it was much help as it was cropped about on the line of whatever's on the glacis. Caption wasn't much help either apart from identifying the tank as belonging to the SRY. Interestingly the photo extended more to the right, showing a couple of M10s.

Since your tank is a troop leader, it's safe not to add any extra aerials, so we're another step forward

David,
thanks for the photo of the SRY. Nice site too.
Good about the aerial. Now we know I don't have to make that one up it's one more detail sorted.

Bradley.
Thanks for the photo of your sight. Now I have to turn mine around :-)
Did it late last night.
Teach me to hijack someone else's thread. . Sorry 'bout that. My tank now has a life of it's own and it's consuming mine !!!

Cheers

Tony
