Here's a potential campaign idea I thought I'd throw out and see if there is any interest:

Campaign Name: Operation Oddball (that's the first thing that came to mind, suggestions welcome

Dates: until the end of the year (see below for why)

Rules/Scope: This campaign would be for subjects that started out life as one thing, but were fundamentally altered to serve a different purpose. Example: a tank chassis adapted to carrying a howitzer or AA gun. Obviously the D-Day "Funnies" would fit this perfectly. The more obscure the better. For me, ever since I saw this:

I've been itching to build it.

The campaign would be primarily for armored vehicles, but perhaps could be extended to winged subjects as well.

Submissions should include some type of photographic proof or reference quote to document the existance of the vehicle. The goal is do do some research and find some unusual adaptations. This is one of the reasons why it might make a good year-long campaign - that plus the fact it might take some of us a year to actually build the critters.

Categories/Classes: Two come to mind: field modifications (including adaptations like the Cuban nightmare pictured), and standardized modifications (ARV's and the like).

Other possible classifications: OOTB vehicles (with or without extra details) like the M1 Panther mine-clearing vehicle; kit-bashes (including the use of third-party conversion kits), and scratch-built subjects. The award could have a different extra bit for the three different classifications.

What do you think? Has something like this been done?

Not a bad concept. Also good timing as the Hi-lux and technicals are out now, giving more options. I would be in, maybe with a HMMWV Avenger or Lav-25 Air Defence kit.....or maybe a technical of some kind....

Great Idea. I'll be a starter for that, with one of Freyberg's Funnies.

Thought to be a fascine carrier, but I've got my doubts

It is good subject, but I am not sure where the borders of this one go.

How about all those German WWII subject that started as tanks and ended up like SPG, tank hunters, AA tanks etc. Would they qualify?

Not really. They still end up as tanks - no change of battlefield role.

The major definition should be change of battlefield purpose. The exception here is going to be AA vehicles, as there is already an AA vehicle campaign going on so they should be excluded from this one.

Standard variations of German vehicles, while technically they might qualify, really shouldn't be done. Think beyond your everyday battlewagon, folks. Bottom line - the more unusual, the better. Small production runs, field modifications, ultra-special-purpose things, experimental critters. Things that make you scratch your head and say, "Dang - that's weird."

How about including military vehicles converted to civilian use, i.e:

or

and there are the many WW2 vehicles that found post-war civilian use, or how about the "Peanut tractor" based on a Centurion built for the great "Groundnut scheme" in Tanganyika.

Just a thought.

cheers

So something like an Egyptian T122 would be ok? From regular tank to SPG? Sounds like a good campaign idea.

Well, now, this looks like fun!

How about this:

OR This?:

Not exactly your workaday types now, are they?

(And if you look closely @ the second pic, you'll see there's even a 6x6 modified for track running...)

How about turretless Pz I used for trainning drivers?
I purchased Tristar's kit and I think it fits to your rules.

Jah, sehr gut. We see the occasional civilian truck modified to run on rails in the neighborhood, it always looks odd.

Please submit this campaign. There's a very good chance it gets approved, and it does sound good!

Sounds like a good idea, but I am a bit confused about what would count as an odd ball?

What about a Sturmtiger? That seems like an odd ball to me.
