Andy- The DML SU-100 is a far better kit then the older Tamiya kit. The detail is far better. There isn,t much out there in SU-85s or SU-100s. Go with DML. Cheers-

Like Rob says, the Dragon SU-100 is very good. The SU-85 is really an SU-85M, which is an SU-100 fitted with an 85mm gun, there are differences to the basic SU-85 modelled by Tamiya. Have a look at Tankmaster's site for SU-100 photographs.

I have recently completed the DML Su-100

https://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/90901#751105

The kit is very good...but:

  • does not have photoetch screens - the screens are molded plastic, not very good
  • Individual Track Links (I am not a fan of these) - average in detail
  • no aluminum barrel
  • Fuel Drums lack good strap holder details
  • no smoke canisters, but they do provide the brackets

With that said, it does have a a nice clear lens cover for the light, twine for the tow cable, good decals (although I had a BAD silvering problem), a very nice mantlet with great texture, nice finely detailed grab handles and nice hatch details.

Overall it is an easy build and good kit when finished. Considering there is not really much out there in a SU-100 (Zvesda/Italeri is the only other one I am aware of), it is a strong recommendation.

I would recommend you pick up the Eduard PE set for the kit and an aluminum barrel if budget allows. This well add some nice details for your build. As with all DML kits there are no crewmne or stowage items.
