:-) I have a Viking that I painted a long time ago, I am reasonably happy with it but I would like to re-do the blonde hair, it's far to yellow. I painted this figure in oils so I would prefere suggestions based on that medium, but any ideas would be appreciated.
I stopped figure painting about the same time that I gave up armour. I only ever completed 4, like everything else on this site though I've been inspired, so I'm looking to paint some more. Sorting out this Vikings hair could be the trigger I need :-)

Try a base of armor sand, a wash of light tan and highlights of yellow fading to almost pure white on the most raised sections. Add abit of brown to the yellow if you want a slightly darker blond color.

Did anyone say: "Vikings"???
Take yellow and mix in white til you have a colour that you like.
Add a medium redbrown for the shadows.
Add white to the base colour for the highlights.

For blonde hair in oils there are many different mixes that will give you good results...one trick I have found that sounded funny but yielded good results was adding green into the mix....for instance.....Naples Yellow + Van Dyke Brown + Sap Green.....over a sand yellow base coat....then highlight with more Naples Yellow...and depending on how blonde you want the hair....adding some white to it.
When adding the green...you just want a touch of it....a little goes a long way.

:-) Thanks Grant,
Mix sounds interesting, I'll mix a few colours and see what transpires. I don't have Sap Green, i guess it's a yellowish green? Food for thought

You said the hair was too yellow. Try using one of the "earthier" yellows like Mars Yellow, Gold Ochre or Raw Sienna. Mix them with Titanium White to a shade you like. Highlight with the same color mix but with more white. When it's dry, add a wash of Raw Umber. It has a nice greenish tone to it when thinned down for a wash.
Just another idea.
Cheers,

I heard some people use greenish colors for shadowing blonde hair and thought: no way.. Hmm, it seems they were not joking after all.

Okay, the link above has blond hair as I described earlier. Fair warning, the figure is scuplted with an exposed breast, so don't go if that offends you.

:-) Al I checked it out, and your album as well, very impressive. I certainly don't mind looking at exposed breasts
Actually the hair on my Viking is about that colour, I think it's a bit light for a Viking though. If for no other reason than I don't think they would have had much chance to wash their hair. What with all the raping and pilliging.
Mario, yeah the green thing sounds interesting, I'll have to try it out on something. :-)

As a matter of fact Vikings/Norse were quite popular among english and irish women since it was well known that they often washed themselves and combed their hair and beard. At least every Saturday which name in Scandinavia still act as an remainder. Lögardagen=washingday, todays shortened version is Lördag.
This is stated from many independent sources. Many combs usually made out of bone and skillfully engraved have been found on almost every excavation.
Another interesting fact is that for every coin from the early middleages (750-950) that have been found in england about 80 have been found in Scandinavia.
When it comes to bare womens breast, I actually like them, but hey, thats only me being me.

For a clarification I can tell you that we still today wash ourself at least once a week. (or was it once a month) Some even more often but I really cant recall whom it was.
I just wanted to throw in my two cents as it is a very common and widespread myth about vikings. Right after the myths about horned helmets and always raiding.
Also Ive noticed that the irish/english lassies still seems to fancy us Norse. At least to some point as I have experienced in recent peaceful raids.
Women seem to love men with beard, why I dont know.
By the way, what brand of viking are you painting and in what scale?

I forgot that I had a picture of a blonde haired person on here.....I would have posted the link earlier....and no....he's not showing any breasts
This blonde hair was painted in the way I described earlier in this thread...using green in the mix. I mentioned sap green.....it's almost olive green....but I think any darkish green could be used for different blondes.

There are 2 pictures of him in my album if you care to look at the other one.
