By the way, if anyone knows of any stockists in europe of Jofix Studios can you share them with me please? Currently having to buy them from the states makes no sense as they're made in Belgium!

(I can't work out from the Joefix website how to buy though it does show all the products)

Taa

Richard

You can also get the products at www.minitair.be. Their site is also available in English.
Hope this helps

Claude, many thanks for your response - yes, I think I know what I've taken on, and it's grown, been scrapped, and started all over again. Never has the thought "where will i put it?" dampened my determination, nor "how do I make palm trees?"... in short, I'm in no hurry, I'm learning all the way, and each little step is more fun than the last.
I plan to use a wide variety of vegetation, from some great looking aquarium plants bought from Mec Models to Kamizuki (sp?) laser cut palm leaves, etched brass ferns, silflor grasses... I will do the water experiment soon, and if it works well, I will be using Envirotex resin/varnish.

When I started I was a novice in every sense, when I finish, I hope to be much improved. But I won't give up!
It's seeing models like Clervaux which have urged me on... so thanks!!

Rich

By the way, it will be ages as I really only get a couple or three hours modelling time per week...

Ok, found some of my reference pictures from my trip last easter... First two are around the town of Can Tho:

And these are near My Tho, close to Saigon, on a chain of small islands in the mighty Mekong river:

I have tons of reference material on the hard drive from various websites which is not really mine to distribute, but forms a huge archive to draw ideas from...
Plus more of the above, (400+ pics) from my trip...
I was going to start a website for this reference material but have run out of time...

Hope this helps you see what I'm working from...

(ps Martyn, you'll be drawing your pension by the time this is finished, so I hope you're patient!)

Hi Richard,
I'm glad to see that you are still busy with this project!
The work you have done to date is coming along nicely, and the shots you have uploaded are great for future reference.
What a trip you must of have experienced!!
I hope one day you are able to have a dedicated site with the photo's of your trip on it, but next to the dio that is probably work in it's self!
Cheers,
Shay

Been working on the dio a bit these last few days, and it's coming along, with a small change here and there...

The paler area running left to right at the top is the road, leading into a yard, which will probably be "paved" in large concrete sections (the road being a gravel/dust track)
The bottom of the pic is where I extended the base by 10cm... and lower right is where a small section of the opposite bank will be made, to give the river a sense of scale width. The bare mdf along the bottom half is the river...
The next pic shows the dio earlier with approximate positions of the PBRs and huts etc.

I've been working hard on the warehouse too, hoping to post some pics this week.
And I've decided to put one of the huts right on the water, as per this pic:

OK, the warehouse: This has been a central part of the dio from day one, and was intended to be a French colonial river warehouse for storing rice and other produce prior to river-boat loading. Therefore, it is built right on the riverbank, on a concrete base, using local bricks, cement rendered and painted. Now it has been taken over by the Americans, who are using it as a staging post for small amounts of diesel fuel, fresh water, and ammo for the river craft engaged in Market Time operations...
I used the venerable Tamiya brick wall sets for the basic structure (4 sets) and reinforced them with plasticard and balsa. Windows and doors are MiniArt, and the roof is corrugated plasticard from an architectural model shop (4D modelshop). The sections of roof were sprayed tamiya aluminium with a touch of grey, then masked and sprayed with Lifecolor rust 1 and 2.
I then coloured some of the bricks, and applied Liquitex Stucco with a tiny palette knife (like a scale trowel) in 2 coats.
The stucco needs painting, the roof fixing, then some more filling, then weathering - lots of rust streaks from metal brackets and other fixings long since gone. Maybe a flag out front, and some industrial looking lights too...
Hope you like it so far:

And this is the product, available from artstores, used to do the plaster:

If we can expect the level of detail shown on this building to be applied to the entire diorama, then we are in for a real treat!

Great modelling, I can't wait to see the building completed.

Thanks all for the kind words...

To Ant; When I started this, I had one Tamiya PBR, and entertained the thought of putting it in a dio - that was nearly three years ago, just when I'd got back into modelling after a 20 year break... I have developed most of my current skills in that time, and the dio has evolved, but right back at the start there was never a point when I: "I won't be able to do this", just that "I won't be able to do this right NOW" - my advice is to think about and plan a dio, make a start, and then be patient - in a year or two you will definitely have the skills to do a dio, bit by bit. I only get a few hours a week to work on mine, and since the start of December, I've only managed to build two sides of a wooden hut - no matter, what's the hurry? And don't forget to keep track of the posts on this site - they are a constant encouragement to me...

Good luck, and get some pictures of back alley sally up soon, eh?

Great job, the boats look perfect.

Endlessly interesting subject as well. Just the word Mekong itself conjures up all kinds of fantastic images. Anything that rates its own alcoholic beverage is worth at least a second look. I think you will have a ton of things to choose from when it comes to the social aspect of your dio. I'm really looking forward to see how this scene will play out.

Cheers.

Ricardo,

Hey, it's looks really good Amigo. Dios this size take time, and as you said, you ain't got lots of it. I've been working a "Hue City" dio for over 8 yrs now. I want this bugger to be dialed in to the "T". It's the only way to honor the guys who lived thru it. Great deal getting those "on scene" pics. Now that's what I call real research. For my dio, "Hue City", I was fortunate enough to sit down with the author of "Phase Line Green", Nick Warr, over coffee. After reading the book and digging for the guy I found he only lived 6 miles from me. Now what's the chance of that happening? He was kind enough to graciously correct some of my misconceptions of the actual battle that raged within the ancient city. Therefore I will honor the 1/5 Marines with only the best in research and detail, correct detail, which is why I ain't in no rush. I recon the Dong Ba tower is going to be the biggest challenge besides the M48. I really wanted to dress up the tank, but that's not what happened and I would prefer to do it right and have the guys from the 1/5 appreciate my effort. They have a wesite too.

I've been painting models and figures since I was 13 back in CA/USA, after a childhood friend's dad got me started. Wayne Burgess use to be the editor of "Campaigns" magazine. It's from the 70's. The guy could make any figure come to life. So I got a lot to live up to, and like you, I won't just get it done to get out the pictures.

Keep the faith Bro and keep us posted on your progress. It's the only way we can get younger lads to "Join the Sport", as I like to say. Thx for sharing your work!

Thx again, Ski.

Here's my latest work below.

Dave,

You can see one of my projects just before finalization in my gallery section. I started when I was a kid with Shep Paines diorama tutorials, the ones that came with the Monogram models in the 70's. They were my first dios. I look at em now and laugh, but we all got to start some where. I have other work posted on Missin-Lynx under Large Scale Figures,

http://www.missing-lynx.com/gallery/figures/101stsz_1.html
http://www.missing-lynx.com/gallery/figures/82airborne120sz_1.html
http://www.missing-lynx.com/gallery/figures/makingastandsz_1.html

I tried posting some of my work on this site two years ago , but the guys who make the decissions on what to post must not have liked what they saw. I always post with MSLX because they always post what I send them.

I like this site becasue there is a lot of young guys getting into the sport who need advice or suggestions and the forums are very active and I like that. I've learned a lot from guys on this site and if I can give some back, I'm all for it.

Thx for the compliment Dave, Ski.

I am, as often happens this time of year, in a kind of stasis on the big dio, and am keeping my hand and eye in with mini projects - An M706 armoured car dio, the crashed huey in a ravine dio, some figure work - but honestly, I've only put in about three hours since christmas! It's frustrating, this hobby, for me at times like this, and although progress is slow, I have it all to look forward to...!
I have, in the meantime, been stockpiling raw materials, plants, resin bits, figures - everything I think I'll need (but probably not enough!).
As soon as I manage to a) move house again, b) sort out my personal and professional life and c) get a bit of time off, I'll try and take some update pics of the smaller stages of the workings for the dio...
In the meantime, thanks for the comments, i love these Vietnam threads!

Good work and good luck to you all!

Progress! I've just done a small test piece of water using the fabled Envirotex lite resin... tinted with some Himbrol 118 for the mekong colour... looks glassy at the mo, and bubble free... will try leaving an impression before it goes off completely, see how it turns out. Will maybe get the dio out of hiding and see if it needs to be changed. Will also attempt some in-box reviews of Verlinden's Large Sampan, Asian Temple Walls and Buddha Temple, which all arrived in the post this week...

Photos of water experiment to follow, in approximately 72 hours at 70 degrees farenheit, if the instructions are to be believed...

Richard,
outstanding work so far bud.I particularly love the layout of this dio and especialy the variety of modeling subjects involved;extensive ground work,figures,armor,buildings,boats,water...and by the looks of the previous pics,it seems you are well capable of achieving a true work of art with this piece.Don't give up on this project.
Hope to see some more progress on this build soon and I wish you the best of luck with the "water test"
Ron.
