First announced what seems like a long time ago, and trailed on their web site all year, Airfix now have their 1/48 British Army Afghanistan range available and in stock.
Airfix's new 1/48 range is based on the recent exploits of the British armed forces during the ongoing Op. Herrick in Afghanistan. These are available in various combinations as standalone kits, or "gift" type sets including paints etc.

  • British Army Troops 1:48 (A03701) - Eight multi-part figures
  • Land Rover Patrol Gift Set (A50121) - The eight figures, one Land Rover, plus paints, glue etc.
  • Helicopter Support Gift Set (A50122) - Eight figures, Westland Lynx AH-7, paints etc.
  • Patrol and Support Group (A50123) - Eight figures, the Lynx helicopter and a Land Rover.
  • Afghan Single Storey Dwelling (A75009) - A fully built resin semi-ruin.
  • Afghan Single Storey House (A75010) - A larger resin semi-ruined building.

I picked up the the Land Rover Patrol set, my first impressions are a welcome and timely release. My only issue is that the Snatch is the 'early' pre Vixen version. The figres are quite nice and well engineered for the new modeller. The Snatch is also well done with seperate doors and bonnet for open and closed options. The WMIK and Santch set produces a curious set, one vehicle is quite old and the other is quite new. The later vehicle is (I think) the RWMIK which had been rebuilt from the best of the upgraded Snatch vehicles that have been retired. All in all a very welcome release and a range that I hope will increase beyond the declared range. Brian

I've been thinking about getting these, and the Jackal, ever since they were announced.. but the initial pics showed very soft detail - almost toy like - on things like the tires. So, is the final product better than those initial pics? A couple of sprue shots would be welcome Hisham

The Airfix structures, just as in their 1/72 range, suffer from overly thick walls and roofs/cielings. They could have thinned them down for a better scaled appearance.

Ironic really as I'm guessing the reason they made them from resin was to get a bit more thickness; after all, in the old days their building walls, in styrene, were always too thin.
