In this the first of three news stories covering Italeri new releases we take a look at the 508 CM “Coloniale” in 1/35th scale.
This new soft skin vehicle from Italeri is joining what is now a well catered for area of the hobby with a number of manufacturers releasing a wide array staff cars in various guises. I am unsure if this model has been released previously however Italeri has listed this as 100% new moulds. Here is the information that Italeri has provided on this model.

Fiat 508 “Balilla” is the most popular car produced in Italy in the thirties. In June 1937, the new “Balilla” 508C, equipped with a 4 cylinders engine of 1.100 cc., has been introduced on the car market. Furthermore, the new 508C has been used as platform for the development of vehicles for military applications such as Fiat 508 CM “Coloniale”. Characterized by a 2-wheel drive traction, a length of 3.6 meters and the reliable 1.100cc 4-cylinders engine, capable of delivering 32 hp that allowed it to reach 90 Km / h, Fiat “Coloniale” was especially used for the mobility of officers and for HQ operations in North Africa. However, the overall strength of the vehicle, the bigger size of the tires, and the good mechanics reliability, had made Fiat “Coloniale” suitable for advanced reconnaissance duties in off-road terrain.

Thanks, Squire, for this one! Is it new tooling or someone else's castoff?

Bill I cannot remember this model being available before and so I believe it is new but I am sure someone will jump on me if I am wrong.

Interesting subject matter. Looks like they chose to mold only one of the four doors positionable, though, which is a pity.

Tsk Bill, how could you? This question was already covered in the "Coming Soon" newstory on this item back in October: "100% new moulds". A couple of links to pix of the real thing may also be found there.

Sheesh, Matt, I'm sorry. You newsies have so many interesting stories coming at me every day, I sometimes can't keep up. In any case, it's good to see new ground being broken by Italeri.

I agree. I've been waiting for this to get released and am a bit disappointed by the single posable door, as well. It's a pretty strange kit engineering choice for Italeri. Why not mold the kit with either all posable or all closed doors? These never seem to close up and match the doors that are molded closed. On the other hand, trying to cut out an pose the other doors open also never matches either. Lots of potentially needless work either way. I'm sure I'll still get one, but I really wish Italeri had put more thought and effort into it.
