Airfix are set to release seven new Diorama and gift sets all in 1/72 scale.
Modellers of a certain age will recognise some of these 2014 releases from Airfix. There are several re-releases in the D-day Anniversary sets and two new toolings in the form of the RAFBF Bomber Command airfield and the Sea Assault Sets . The WWI sets look new to me, I'm sure someone will put this straight if not :

D-day sets:

A05701 - D-Day Gun Emplacement
A05702 - D-Day Coastal Defence Fort
A50139 - RAFBF Bomber Command Gift Set
A50156 - D-Day The Sea Assault Gift Set
A50157 - D-Day The Air Assault Gift Set

World War One Sets:

A50144 - WWI The First Assault Gift Set
A50145 - WWI Artillery Barrage Gift Set

Those first two sets, at least, date back to the 60's, and now look more like toys (as a matter of fact, they were toys back then, too!). I suppose their next 'new' release will be the Robin Hood and Knights figure sets with a castle!

I agree with biggles I had the first set when I was a kid and I am near sixty now, but the groundswell is starting with ww1 items, and those two sets will be a must have , I bought the bomber set and it is excellent.

No offence, but they are just ancient and don't look very realistic. There's a lot of newer stuff available, but also more expensive. Italerie make some nicer pillboxes and bunkers in 1/72.

Sure. I think Airfix offer some great kits to suit all budgets and abilities from armchair modellers to experts..

The two bunker sets do look toy like but they might just be enough to encourage the younger generation to put down the tablets, game controllers and all the other electronic gadgets that seem to occupy their time and look into the joy of building a model. I don't think they are aimed at the expert level that most on here are at, not including myself cause I'm far from it. We seem to forget that we older modellers are not always the target demographic. I recently bought my 10 year old daughter the Airfix 1:72 Matilda cause she wants to build a model and I'm going to do everything I can to encourage her. So these "bunkers" might fit the bill as well to allow her to put glue to plastic and slap on some paint. Even if she decides to use fluro pink paint.

I bought my god son the Airfix command post set for precisely this reason. its a simple kit that went together over a weekend. accuracy was never an issue he's just happy he now has something to put his toy soldiers on..

I always liked Airfix's castle kit (I have a 'thing' for castles), but the walls are way too single-dimensional, and would take several kits to kit-bash a realistic castle.

remember the first two sets from my childhood
