A short whle ago, I ran an update on the French publishers Editions du Barbotin - the publishers of the excellent Trackstory books on French armor. In that report, I briefly mentioned a forthcoming book on the M4 Sherman in French service, now, the information can be updated....
The news is that Editions du Barbotin are, from December 1st, launching a new series of books under the series title, Centurytracks. The first title will be:

n°1 : French Shermans of the Liberation, 1943-1945. (Les Shermans français
de la libération / 1943 - 1945)

The book will consist of 64 pages (12 of them consisting of color plates). The book, as is customary from this company will be completely BILINGUAL (French/English). As to availabilty, it can be ordered directly from the company, whose website can be seen:

By way of a 'taster' of a bool covering some of the most colorful Shermans ever seen in service, here are some more images:

I've already ordered mine , I like Trackstory and this newest addition by the publisher promises to fill several Missing Links, so to speak.

Just ordered mine also. As you say Jim the markings carried by the French were some of the most colourful of the war plus they seem to have used nearly every variant of the Sherman at one stage or another.

I am given to understand that the only varient not it major usage by France was the M-4 itself. Apparently a single M-4 late ( Hybrid) was issued. Now, I do understand that several M4(105mm ) WERE issued to French units. I've been diddling around with combining French armor with American infantry units. So far I have found at least three good examples. So, all good for me , too.

I am happy to confirm that the first run has been received wednesday direct from the printer and that Pascal Danjou is now busy shipping the pre-ordered books. Regarding the variants used, I found out (I am the author but the book would not have been possible without Pascal's help) - the 2e DB got more different models than the 2 other armoured divisions (1e and 5e); I prepared a data sheet for the book - and that M4s were only found in 2e DB artillery units, probably because of the common engine with the M7s. The 1e and 5e DBs got first M4A2s or M4A4s and later turned to M4A1s, often Remanufactured, as observation posts. And probably for the same reasons, given that US depots could not provide much if any M4A2s or M4A4s as replacements in the ETO. In fact, 2e dB got 2 Detroit built M4s (Composite/Hybrid) with widened side mudguards but only one was used operationnally, ie Wissembourg. Harstadt II was a replacement for Harstadt 'zero' but it was only used for training early 1945. While the 2e DB fought much of August to November fighting along US troops in 3rd and later 7th Army, it joined hands (tracks?) with the 2 others in 1st French Army (6th Army Group- also comprising 7th Army) in Alsace. 7th Army (6th US Corps IIRC) loaned American units to 1e armée française to clear the Colmar pocket in January-February 1945. There are many photos in the French Military Archives ECPA-D in Fort d'Ivry near Paris, in the "Terre" albums. HTH

I got my copy on Friday and am very pleased with it. Good quality glossy paper, good colour profiles and great photographs. A must for Sherman fans.
