Jeff Shiu has a new figure in progress for his 1/16 scale range, depicting German soldier from The Great War.

The figure is sculpted by Jeff Shiu in 1/16 (120mm) scale and cast in resin. To be released soon.

I think you're right about the shell casing being used as a gas alarm. Metal on metal was a standard gas alarm before there were automatic detectors and alarms.

The Soldier is looking down into a trench - as other people have pointed out, the canister is a bell made from a shell as a gas alarm.
