With the arrival of this month's Osprey newsletter announcing the new titles to be published in June, it struck me that this new title was perhaps worthy of a little more than simply appearing amongst a list of other titles.
Modelling The IS Heavy Tank by Nicola Cortese, is this author's first title for Osprey. The book itself is the ninth in the Osprey Modelling series which covers both Aviation and Armor subjects in some detail.
The IS (Josef Stalin)Series of Soviet MBTs made its first appearance in 1944. Primarily they were designed to deal with the new generation of German armor such as the Tiger or the Panther. Sporting much heavier armor than previously and with a gun which was designed to penetrate at longer ranges, the IS series established a lineage whose design can still be seen more than 60 years after its inception.
The Book
Following on with the established format of the series, the book deals with variants of the IS series. It also does not concentrate simply on 1/35th scale. Two chapters cover different projects in 1/76th scale, reflecting the increasing importance/popularity of 'Braille-Scale' nowadays.
The twelve chapter headings are as follows:
Introduction
Modelling the Josef Stalin Tank
Building The ISU-152
Building the IS-2
Building the IS-3M
Building the IS-3
Building the ISU-152 SPG (1/76th)
Building the IS-2 (1/76th)
Further Reading and Research
Kit Availability
Modelling The IS HeavyTank (Osprey Modelling 9) will be published on the 25th of June.
