Normandy Road Signs WWII
Normandy Road Signs WWII

introduction
By the time the Allies pushed on from Normandy the area was littered with road signs from the invaders, the occupying Germans, and of course the French - who owned the place. To aid our dioramas, Matho has released a set of useful signs that covers a number of possible scenarios.

review
In a plastic envelope there is a single sheet of heavy white paper with the signs printed on it. The back is printed too, since many signs are attached to posts (not included) that allow the underlying board to be seen.

The French signs look very much like those seen in period photos. Some are clearly meant to be stuck on buildings, and have no backing colour, but the big blue ones have grey "metal" backs so are meant for poles. The only issue with all of these signs is the way the white card shows through at the cut edges - a lick of paint sorts this out! Bear in mind they are only thin card, so can be easily bent by accident.

Then there are Wehrmacht signs, some of which I've seen in period photos. And of course we also get Allied signs with a more make-shift design.

conclusion
This is a handy set of period signs to add a little colour to any Normandy diorama.
SUMMARY
Highs: Bright colours! (Makes a change from drab scenery.) Signs appear accurate.
Lows: Paper signs are fragile unless stuck to a solid backing like a building. White shows through at cut edges.
Verdict: Very useful!

About Tom Cromwell (barkingdigger)
FROM: ENGLAND - EAST ANGLIA, UNITED KINGDOM

A Yank living overseas on a long-term basis, I've been building tanks since the early '70s. I relish the challenges of older kits (remember when Tamiya was "new"?...) because I love to scratch-build.

Comments

The blue signs were original French road signposting, which were usually affixed to purpose built moulded concrete posts, some of them, e.g. the Paris/Cherbourg one featured would be on a triangular sectioned concrete sign - you can still see them around nowadays. For these you will need to source the post elsewhere.
