Surrendering Arab

by: Vinnie Branigan [ TEACHER ]

introduction
Civilian figures are always a rarity, so although this one is surrendering, it's a welcome addition to the Warriors line.

quick look
The set consists of a single figure, moulded in one piece, apart from two separately cast hands. The casting is sharp, and shows fine detail on the figures head, which is wearing a full beard and moustache, and headdress, ogal and sleeveless tunic over it's Thoub. The figure is attached to a pouring block by it's feet, so this will need to be removed, as well as a small amount of flash between it's legs, and two small stubs on the end of it's arms. There is also a prominent seam running down the middle of the figure's back which will need to be filled and sanded smooth, as well as four small triangular fillets of resin either side of each arm.

Although the VLS website describes the figure as 'Surrendering Arab - OIF', the OIF is missing from the pack, and to be honest there's nothing I can see on the figure that really dates it as modern, and it could probably be used for any 20th Century arab figure. it also doesn't really need to be depicted surrendering. It's arms could be raised in surprise or frustration even.

conclusion
A very useful figure from Warriors, and one that can used not just in OIF setArabtings. I can think of a few WWII dioramas where this figure could easily have been used. Recommended, and keep an eye out for this one being used in a diorama build coming soon.

SUMMARY
Warriors have produced an Arab figure ostensibly surrendering during OIF, however, it could be used in a variety of settings from the middle East during the 20th Century, and not just surrendering either.

Vinnie- I have recently added this figure to my stash and must say it is of very high quality and thorough in detail. Also, the pose could also be interpeted as a greeting couldn't it? cheers for positive actions!

Or giving a speech.

Or doing the Hokey-pokey...... But talk about cliche dress though - he doesn't look like any of the "arabs" I've seen on television during OIF coverage.

More like one of the three wise men visiting the baby Jesus. I think it would have been very easy for the producer to have added a lot of value to this fig by giving it some contemporary accessories like a mobile phone or sunglasses, or even a briefcase.

Got to agree with you both, he would look very out of place in most OIF dio's. Most insurgents we see on TV are wearing baseball caps, black T-shirts, jeans etc, this chap looks very 'retro'. Then again the set doesnt say hes for OIF. The head looks good and it would be ncie if they made a head set wearing those scarfs.
