introduction
One of the things that can really slow down a model from looking its best is accessories.
Coco Chanel would probably have something to say about accessories....
But I digress. In the case of modern AFVs, that can mean stowage in general, and ammo boxes in particular. Germany's Perfect Scale Modellbau has done more than its part to recreate the world of modern AFVs there, both NATO and Bundeswehr. One of its latest releases is a set of .30 cal and .50 cal ammo boxes.
what you get
Inside PSM's usual ziploc baggie are:
20 gray resin ammo boxes
the review
The keys to resin ammo boxes and the level of detailing and the ease with which they can be removed from their pour plug. In both cases, PSM gets high marks. While PE-constructed boxes would be sharper in detail, they'd be a major PITA (pain in the ***). These can be sawed off their pour plugs easily because the box is separated from the plug by a small channel. That leaves less room for error than with some resin boxes I've used.
The detailing is crisp and should paint up very nicely. These can work for a variety of usages wherever .30 cal and .50 cal MGs would be appropriate. You should even look at
this thread on Armorama to see some creative field modifications for these boxes by US troops in action.
NB: According to
this site, the US revamped its ammo cans after WW 2, so I would recommend these for post-war or later.
The message is pretty simple: wash with soapy water, cut off the pour plug and paint.
conclusion
There's not a lot you can say about ammo boxes in this scale. Either they're well-cast or they're not. Either they look realistic or they don't. These look to add a lot to a modern build for very little spending.
Thanks to Perfect Scale Modelbau for providing this review sample. Be sure to mention you saw it reviewed here on Armorama when ordering.
