I have done researth on the subject of a brit leo.
it turns out it was rejected due to issues with the streanth of the front armour on the turret but the vehicle that was to offered was to be the 2A5 witch adressed these issues.
The other front runner was the M1A1/A2 when this was sudjested to the then primie minister Margret Tatcher the board in charge was told to go away and find another soloition as to say "We are not haveing another nations tank in our armed forces".
Hope this setels the subjet.

Hi, sorry to sound sceptical, but the British would never have bought a tank or weapons system made outside of the UK in the 1980's under Thatcher's rule. For all her faults Thatcher's government was for political reasons keen to develop our own weapons and systems.
The Challenger project was tended by the main British weapons companies and although the Germans mights have developed a prototype it surely would never have been considered. Chieftain, Vickers (eventually sold to India) and the Challenger project were the only ones I know of in contention.
Leopard 2 was developed with co-operation with the Dutch and Germans to the best of my knowledge. As such if the British were to adopt this tank, it wouldnt come with the new highly secretive Chobham Armour.
If anyone has more info please prove me wrong!
Cheers
i think he was actually refering to the early 1990's under John Major his goverment was considering either going for the 2A4 or the abrams to replace the challenger 1 but ruled both out shortly after deciding the UK goverment was going to upgrade the challenger 1 to challenger 2
