Main Painting?

Any undercoat?

I always start of with a primer coat of Tamiya Surface Primer.
I'm not completely sure about the approach I'm gonna take on this all OD vehicle, I picked up some tips from Michael Rinaldi on painting OD vehicles, so I guess my approach will be something like this.
A preshading coat of Tamiya XF-61 Dark green to get some shadows in the dark areas.
Then a coat of plain OD, maybe shot from kinda above the vehicle.
Then lightening the other coats with a mix of OD and Tamiya Buff or Sky.
Then to lighten some more and to get some shifting in the color I guess I'll be adding some JA green to the OD/Buff/Sky mix.
...and then you know, the various rain streaks, weathering.....and so on....

I'm thinking of trying my first shot of color modulation on this vehicle so I'm guessing it will be sorta draw the map after the terrain as I walk...

I will be following your painting method with interest mate. I'm certain that we will be doing different things in the way of painting, and lets hope both our results are worthwhile! You seem to have a grasp of colour mixes (and an airbrush ) so mine will be quite 'plain' in comparison, although will get a fair bit of weathering.

Hmmm.... you're raising the bar for me on this paintjob mate, remember I'm still a rookie when it comes to armor modeling. Hopefully it will be interesting for you to watch, and interesting and challenging for me to do.
I'm planning some heavy weathering on this one, but the only thing I'm gonna steer away from is heavy paint chipping. I read somewhere, don't remember where thou, that the paint coats on US vehicles was kinda baked on so chipping would rarely occur.
I recon it will be just as interesting for me to follow your painting process aswell.

@Jeff: I know you're wating for the paintjob bud! I've started slowly with the paint by laying down a primer coat and a preshade coat of Tamiya XF-61 Dark Green.

As mentioned in the previous post I've started the painting process.
Here's a couple of shots of the Sherman so far, nothing fancy yet. Just the Tamiya Surface Primer and a preshade coat of Tamiya XF-61 Dark Green. I've applied the dark green to get a nice dark base for the shadowed areas of the vehicle. I will subsequently lighten and fade this base color. First step is to spray the OD from above to get it to blend in with the Dark Green in the lower areas of the vehicle, I hope.
Well anyways, that's next, here's some pics...

...and one more thing, remind me the next time I'm building a Sherman to hold back on mounting the suspension until after painting the first base coat! What a p.i.t.a to get inside all those nooks and crannies!

I think I am going with more of a light green,well OD green but with some Khaki mixed in.

I did in my haste glue the Gun Mantel on then saw in the Instructions that a piece B-34 had to go on first so in a Panic I was removing the darn thing only to find out that I could of glued it from the inside to begin with.
I love Tamiya Instructions Dragon could learn a few things from them.

Well it is starting to come together now.

Can't wait to see it painted in full.

So any other plans to build another one?

I am thinking once this one is done maybe that Israel one the M-50.

Anyways, here's a small update.

Quite a challenge to paint these mono colored vehicles.
Here's some pics after the first three transparent coats of OD and two transparent coats of OD mixed with Tamiya Sky in a shade I thought looked ok. I tried to apply the lighter shade of color along the edges and where the light would fall naturally. I used a lamp as a "sun template" in front and slightly elevated over the vehicle to notice the highlights when airbrushing.




Then I airbrushed two coats of MIG filters, first Green for Light Green and then Grey for Bright Green. I applied the grey to try and fade the OD even more.
I then made a mix of Abteilung Faded Grey and Odourless Turpentine and brushed it over the entire vehicle. Left this to dry for a while and used the same mix and a flat thin brush on edge to make some rain streaks, you can barely see them on the turret here. More of these streaks will be applied when the weathering starts.



I decided that the vehicle should belong to the "Tiger Division" 20th Armored Infantry Battalion, 10th Armored Division in Germany spring/summer 1945.
I put the decals for this unit on with Solvaset and I think I steered clear of the dreaded silvering.
I then mixed an even lighter green shade and brush painted the parts sticking out on the vehicle like filler caps, hinges and so on. Not very visible in the pics but it's there.

Well here she is now with decals, another filter coat of Faded Grey filter and a Vallejo Air satin clear applied.






I'm now starting the tedious process of painting the stowage and detaling the lower hull so I recon it will be some time until the next update. Cannot say that I'm looking forward to painting all that stowage in the back, hopefully I'll pull it off.
When that's done the real fun begins...weathering!

Beautiful job with your Sherman. All that pe would give me fits. The crews of the M4A3's did try to keep more of the grills exposed as these are the air intake to the radiators. Looking forward to seeing the completed model.

Yup, I'm using MIG products, awesome products in my opinion. The 502 Abteilung oils is just superb for washes, fading, well you name it. Great selection of colors and easy to dissolve in turpentine. I'll be using these oils and adding some MIG pigments to the different mixes later down weathering avenue.

@Randall: Thanx for the kind words. The PE was a challenge, but a fun one.
I know I've covered up a bit too much of the rear grills, but I'm blaming it on the crew of this vehicle. They had to pack up and leave in a hurry due to reports of nearby enemy activity, so the stowage is just thrown up there in a hurry with no time to think about placement.

Can't wait to see the outcome Buddy.

Yep that stowage will be a real treat to paint.
