This is my 1/35 Dragon Flakpanzer V Coelian build.
I intend to build this almost oob apart from a rear deck mesh set by Lionroar.
As this vehicle never made it into active service, I'm still thinking about painting and markings. I'm even thinking of a what if, with US markings for the unified europe invasion of russia
Heres some pics, I'm alternating between this and my Jagdpanther build.

Durring the end of the war, German Camoflage doctrine was pushing for the Octopus scheme. Don't know want this would do for a allied/german vehical. I would of thought with all the surplus OD and allied air power the White star would have been used. Looking forward to your finnish. Ultimately it was what the Germans wanted from the start

Thanks Geraint. I've just had a look at octopus schemes, and this is a finish I may look at using. Maybe a red oxide primer with dunkelgelb and olive drab pattern? I have the verlinden US star stencils that I can use for the markings. Should make an interesting concept

I've managed to complete step 2 tonight. This was assembling the rest of the roads wheels and gluing to the hull, plus fitting the other halves of the drive sprockets. Caution is needed when gluing the road wheels to the hull. You need to make sure they line up, and have the same spacing between. Mine aren't 100% perfect, but are close enough.
Hopefully time will allow step 3 to be completed tomorrow night.
We also have a public holiday here in New Zealand on Friday, so am hoping to get several hours of building in, but I can see SWMBO ruining that plan!

Looking good, Its the great grandad of the Sgr York. A very advanced AA platform for its day. Really looking forward to the paint job you come up with. I'm woundering what type of uniform the crew would have worn. Now that would be an intresting mix

Thanks for the comments Mark, yes the bogies would probably be my least favourite part of armor modelling! Just the repetative steps over and over
Hope to get some progress made today

Thanks Matt and Geraint. I"ve got a few thoughts in regards to some crew members for the tank, but have a few issues with how to kit out the crew to suit my unified europe invasion of russia theme for the kit. The main issue is the uniform, helmets and sidearms etc. I suppose it would depend on what point I made the change in history, and if I wanted to keep some of the detailing historically accurate. I'm thinking of American tanker uniforms, maybe equiped with german helmets?? Crews equipped with MP44s??
Has anyone else done anything similar to this? Any feedback/suggestions would be appreciated

Great start Andrew! Very unique thoughts on how to finish it, kinda cool. Looking forward to watching your progress on this. Kit should go together pretty well, I finished one a year or so ago, was pleased with the build.
Enjoy! Thanks for sharing.

I was looking through your gallery pics and saw that you had built one too!
Is there anything I should watch out for during the build?

I have completed Step 3, which included tool boxes, jack and exhaust stacks. However, now that I have seen the exhaust in the pic, I might get a little bit of filler in to clean up the exhaust.
I didnt get as much done as I had hoped today, murphys law struck as I took a lunch break from building, I found an unopened bottle of coke zero had leaked throughout the fridge, so the rest of the afternoon was spent cleaning the inside of the fridge!
Will get some more of the kit done tonight while watching Black Cap vs Australia in the Cricket!!
Below is a pic of completed Step 3

Here is my final update for today. I've completed steps 4, 5 and 6. Been distracted by watching New Zealand winning the cricket, and cooking dinner and doing dishes.
I made new grab handles from 0.5mm wire for the hatches. I used self closing tweezers to bend the handles. One is a little bigger than the other, but I'm happy with them. I'm saving up to buy a mission models grab handler in the next week or two.
Not sure how much I'll get done tomorrow, as we are off to the beach, and having bbq dinner and drinks in the evening.
Heres pics of the progress

You are doing a good job. Ialso like the fact you're adding some more pis. I personally like seeing pics of all around the model, but that's just me. It's your log anyway. Good luck and I can't wait to see it finished.

Blast modells have done a what if uniform fo 46 tankers. IMHO it is a quite furturistic blend, they seem to be a bit of a mix of Geraman and modern allied gear. Check them out. I would go with MP 44, because lets face it, it was as about as modern as an assault rifle got, and look how many AK folowed onThanks Matt and Geraint. Hi Geraint
I might have a look at those figures to get an idea. I guess I'll have to scratch the line in the sand for where accurate history ends, and what if begins. A successful assasination of hitler in early september 1944 could be the starting point. It gives enough time for negotiations (cease fire, and invasion plans) between germany and the allies (excluding russia), and before russia advances too far west.
As always all suggestions and feedback are welcome

Hi Andrew, Your flakpanzer is coming along nicely, and I also like where your going with it. I like the concept, who knows what might have happened with Hitler out of the way in 44.
I like the oxide base scheme and the stars, now that would look really cool.

Here's a progress update for today, a few more steps completed.
I completed step 7, which was attaching grills to rear hull. A hint for those who have a Flakpanzer Coelian to build in their stash, part J19 (x2) will require rounding on one corner, as all J19s corners are square, yet the hull has a a round corner.
Step 8 was fitting the crew heater unit, and some lifting hooks. I left off part F32 as I am fitting the Lionroar engine mesh set.
The Lionroar mesh set is very fine, you have to be careful not to bend the mesh when cleaning up the parts. I just used superglue to attach the etched parts to the kit.
Richard, I added a few more pics of each step this time
Back to work tomorrow
Hopefully will get the build completed this week and ready to paint on the weekend.

Looks good. Did the mesh have the bolts on the corners or did you add them. (or my eyes might be playing tricks...)
I can't wait to see it done. Are you going to have the cannons facing forward or towards the air.

Hi Richard,
The mesh set isnt quite complete. I started getting quite tired last night, and didnt want to risk losing any parts. There is further bolt detail to be added, I'll probably finish this tomorrow night.
I've glued the travel mount down, so I'll be aiming the cannons skyward. I'm toying with ideas for a small diorama for the kit, maybe have it parked on the side of a road, with some of the crew standing on the tank, and one or two in a field/paddock inspecting a section of shot down russian plane.

It's been a slow week on the build front with the Flakpanzer, I've spent more time on ebay and other sites looking at buying more kits, I'm leading an auction for a Tamiya Sturmpanzer Brummbar for a dirt cheap price. I intend to scratchbuild it into a late version following an article from Tamiya Model Magazine International Issue 12 Winter 1987 and updating with modern aftermarket detail sets lol.
Back to the Flakpanzer, I got quite a bit of work done today, completed fitting the Lionroar mesh set. And steps 9 - 16 were finished, as well as putting a 1st prime coat on the upper and lower hull.
The weather was a bit off for painting, but am not overly worried, as it is just a 1st coat.
Hope to get the turret completed and primed tomorrow. Might leave it for a day or two to harden, so its a good excuse to start the next project lol
