Hi guys,
just found across this discussion. Made a start on my Comet last week and was looking around for matchbox threads.
Is it too late to get in myself? I got a couple more of the originals and some revell reboxes. Could be a good excuse to dig another out and get cracking.

Good builds so far. I like the Chally 1, I never knew they did one of those.

Welcome Stephan! It is not at all too late for you to join this campaign. It started Jan. 15/10 and runs until May 15/10. If you wish to participate then go to the Matchbox Campaign Enlistment page and click on the "Enlist" button on the right hand side of the page above the Enlistees list.

If you just started your Comet last week then it is legitimate. If you can, please post a picture(s) of the box, instructions, decals and the kit sprues. If you have build/progress pictures, they would also be appreciated. If you have any questions please feel free to ask in this thread.

You can build as many kits as you desire but only one ribbon/award is given to each participant after completion of the campaigns' basic requirements. We already have a few individuals that have or are working on their second build.

Again, thanks for your interest and I'll add you to our scoreboard after you officially enlist.

---------------------------------------------------------

@AJB - that Challenger is really starting to look superb. Some of your pictures really can get one wondering as to what scale it is. You are getting really close to the end and I can't wait to see the finished build. BTW, as stated in the rules, your embellishment of the base is totally legal.

Cheers,
Jan

AJB: me inspire? Wahahaha! I don't think even my kids get inspired by me

Funny thing that I was inspired to get going after seeing you and jan start with your challengers.

JAN: Putty? Whats that? Yeah mine especially. I have finished assembly. Hope to paint tonight. I'll post photos ASAP.

While finishing assembly of my Challenger 1 last night I was thinking, the title of the Campaign was Matchbox Nostalgia Campaign. I built my first Challenger only around 12 years ago. I already had an airbrush and was pretty much more "advanced" in my building when I made it. So I said as soon as I can, I'm going to build another Matchbox kit. One that I built when I was 9. So after this I'm building a Panther. I have upto May to complete it anyway, right?

Toby, I am very glad that people in this campaign are being inspired by other members. It is my humble belief that that is the great thing about a good campaign. I have mentioned that I have an incomplete Challenger but I haven't put up any pictures of it. After the M40 I may tackle finishing it, perhaps even as an entry in the Tank Overhaul Campaign. :H

As I mention in my reply to Stephen (phantom_phanatic309) the campaign runs until May 15/10 so you have over a month and a half to do additional builds.

Well it's been kind of quiet here as of late. Can I take it that everyone has their nose to the cutting mat! In a separate thread here on Armorama I read about a Xuron sprue cutter and low and behold when I went to the LHS they actually had just got one in stock. Needless to say, I scooped it up and man what a marvellous tool it is. It cuts so close that parts need hardly any sanding. I also picked up a new tube of Squadron green putty to fill those pesky gaps on the M40. I must say that the new putty really makes a difference as it spreads so nicely.

So here's a picture of the hull front in it's current and I hope pretty well final stage.

The pieces of the gun carriage are finally coming together and I've added the sprockets, idlers and return rollers. A warning to those building this vehicle, the sprockets will require some careful filing around several of the teeth due to the way they were attached to the sprue.

I am still not sure about what orientation I'll pose the gun in but I have a bit of time to give it some thought. BTW Michael (sabredog) which unit markings are you going to choose?

Cheers,
Jan

Not sure yet which unit I am going to choose, but will let you know as soon as I decide!.

I got some more done last week on the build. A second lighter layer of OD, so all is starting to shape up nicely. Plenty more to do yet, including painting the skinny little towing cable.

Hi everyone. The camouflage is pretty much done and I've toned the black down and distressed it. Still got a fair bit to do on the base but I am hoping to get a gloss coat on today and then the decals.

AJ, the tracks look good on this one, and the thermal sleeving on the barrel is nice too. Quite an ugly (in a good way) brutal looking tank really isn't it?

OK, here's a quick progress update on the bonus ball Panzerjager IV/70, primed as you can see:

Stowed parts done separately; the jack handle proved too thin for my clumsy mould seam removing technique and snapped in half in protest, so on the right is the replacement made from 0.3 and 0.5 mil rod:

Going back, Jan, to what you said about the wheels, apparently the front tyres used to get destroyed by the weight of the armour and the gun - and that is a lot of overhanging gun, as visible above - so they switched to all steel wheels for the front pair on the later versions.

Nice to see some action in the campaign thread. I haven't exactly been burning the midnight oil but have had some progress. I am just about ready to complete the suspension and the gun proper is done. I decided to not mess too much with the actuator arms and have the gun in a preparing to be in action pose. The barrel lock is down and the barrel has a slightly elevated posture. That should work out well as Michael has his in a more action pose.

@Sabredog - Ah come now Michael, where are some pictures! I've shown you mine so it's time for you to show yours.

@AJB - I must agree with firstcircle in that your beast is truly looking menacing. I like the way you're giving it a used look without going too far. Just out of curiosity sake, which decals do you plan to use? If I get around to finishing mine I was thinking of the BOAR Royal Hussars ones.

@firstcircle - I appreciate your update pictures and the primed Panzerjager is looking good. Thanks for straightening me out on the issue of the front road wheels. I have an Italeri and all the road wheels are the same. Then again, it is the model with the L48 gun as opposed to the L70.

Cheers,
Jan

Jan and firstcircle, thanks for the kind comments. Both your projects appear to be progressing well. I got the gloss coat applied and today did the decals. Some of them like the tiny Union Jacks were a nightmare to position. I think that next will be a clear coat to seal the decals and then a matt coat to hopefully get the dusty look back. I tried to create a collage to show the decals without overflowing this post with pictures. Hope you can make out the markings.

After it's back to a flat base I'll do detail painting (tools, periscopes etc) and touch up the weathering. Still working on the base too.

Regards,
AJ

Ok I'm in!
Not much has been done on the Comet. Hull and wheels have been glued together, long way to go yet. Improved a couple of areas with plasticard and the like but its still OOB. No progress pics yet but I'll see about getting some tomorow. One question though, I have a Millicast turned-brass gun barrel I was planning on using. Would that be permitted? If not no problem I'll stick with the original.
I also have an original Wespe unstarted I might do.

Not my decision, but sounds against the strict rules - but then again, it seems a shame not to - when else would you use it??

Do it. There is a need for a bit more Germanic armour on this thread!

I got a couple of those when I did a few Fireflys a couple of years back. This is the last one I found in my spares box. If not it will find a home on something else. But its SO much better than the original! If I'm permitted it would be the only aftermarket part. On a similar theme, what about figures? The Comet doesn't come with anyway and I've got some resin ones looking for a home.
The Wespe is very tempting, its a very quick build. I picked it up at a carboot sale along with a German 6x6 radio car, sorry I dont remember the name of that right now. Thats half finished but started several years ago. Most of the parts have come off the sprues over time (luckily nothing is missing).
I've just seent that Char B1 and Renault looking back through the pages. Beautiful paint job. I may have to look around for one of those for myself.

Stephen, glad to have aboard and welcome. Your build choice and progress will show on the score card table on page 11 of this thread. Please do post your progress pictures at your earliest convenience. As to your two requests here are the pertinent rules:

2. Out of box (OOB) builds are encouraged. Deviations from OOB builds should be limited and represent minimal variation from the original.

In originally discussing the campaign with the co-leader and comments from this group we decided to keep the builds 90+% "pure." I don't believe that even the main gun barrel represents a 10% deviation and indeed can be construed as "minimal deviation.".

4. The modeller is permitted to make minor corrections or additions to enhance the model. These can include but are not limited to clear windshields/windows, antennas, resizing of small oversized pieces (ie-machinegun barrels, grab handles) and external stowage. If in doubt, ask.

With this rule it was to give the builder a bit of artistic licence to individualize their creation. I can't see that adding two or three figures are as above, causing an excessive variation from the spirit of the campaign. As a further example, Michael and my M40's come without figures. While not categorically mentioned in the rules I wouldn't deny adding a small limited crew to a build like these.

Matthew (firstcircle), I didn't want to make the rules excessively strict but as I stated, I also did not want to excessively restrict some creativity. Thus the last line of rule 4 to inquire as to an actions legality under the spirit of the rules.

Sorry to be so long winded but in short, the turned barrel and a couple of figures are allowable. If anyone has any other questions pertaining to what's allowed please feel free to ask.

@AJB - From the pictures I see that you chose the 2nd RTR decals. If/when I get around to mine I'll use the Royal Hussars ones.

Cheers all,
Jan

Ok so got some pics today. You'll have to excuse the less than brilliant quality, had to take them with my mobile as the digital has gone AWOL.
First up the Wespe. A lot of the parts have come off the sprue and the original owner did make a crude start of painting the lower hull. I always like the base and figures that come with this one and does anyone else think that the German officer looks a little like Rommell?

Now the Comet. Improvements so far have included covering the holes under the hull stowage bins with plasticard, sanding off the tow cable and adding some lights from the spares box. I haven't been able to get lightguards to go quite right but I've seen a few photo's of Comets without them fitted.

I also used plasticard to cover up the hole under the stowage bin. A few more things to do like make up the lifting hooks, fire extinguishers, searchlight etc.

This is the kit barrel and the replacement I'm considering using. Its a little longer but looks right compared with photo's of the real thing.

Its just minor cosmetic improvements. Those zonking great holes under the stowage bins really do need to be covered and it needed headlights rather than the pair of blobs moulded on the hull front. The new barrel is still something to be considered. Jan saw no reason why not. I might use the kits, which bears no resemblance to the the real thing, for the purpose of the group build and then remove and replace at a later date. PVA glue is fine for tacking on temporary parts. Thats really why I'm out for everyones opinion on that. If the more people say nay than yay then I'll go with the majority. I still feel the improvements I've made are well within the 90% OOB limit. All the turret needs now is searchlight, extuinguishers, lifting loops and stowage points to be made up from scrap bits. Untill I found this group build early last week the Comet started as an excersise in trying to make an old kit look as good as a new Dragon 1:72, so some plans I had might be a bit too ambitious for this.
The Wespe on the other hand will be 100% OOB except for the odd bit of stowage. I cant see any major problems with that one.

Greetings Richard, As long as a campaign is active and you can complete a build by the end date (May 15/10) it's never too late. Just click on the bannor at the bottom of my post and that should take you to the enlistment page. If you have have any issues or problems please feel free to ask in this thread.

@Sabredog - Thanks for posting pictures Michael. At least from what I see you have had some of the same issues I experienced. Not quite the simple quick an easy build that many of us thought! Putty, putty and more putty.

My entry for the campaign is the M7 Priest, I have always like the M7, and have built a few matchbox kits in my college years .

Photobucket

I always enjoyed the Matchbox diorama in a box.
