Hey Paul,
Dont Know if you noticed but this tread is 6 pages long and that campaign start is still more than 2 months away. I think you stirred up a hornets nest of Sherman lovers. Good job.

Hi Guys,
OK, here is one for you all to trake a second look at:
The M4A3 Sherman as has been started many times was not used operationally by the British, only 7 being listed as being received.
However, in British Sherman Tanks by Dennis Oliver he mentions the M4A3 Sherman IV. In operational tables compiled by 1 Armoured Replacement Group of 15th Army are listed 33 Sherman IVs received "ex Units and Formations" between 11 May 1944 and 2 May 1945.
The implications of the "ex Units and Formations" line is obvious, unfortunately no explanation or specific units are listed, but there may have been a limited number in action with the British, possibly aquired form the Americans as repalcements? Who knows but the M4A3 was externally very similar to the M4A2 so based on that data I believe one is doable.
It would be good to have a picture, and who knows what might turn up in the future.
How many pictures have been mis-identified, with the similarity between the M4A3 and M4A2 and because no one is looking for the M4A3 in Brish Service who knows one might already exist, don't you just love Shermans.
So would you all please keep you eye out and see if you can come up with anything concrete
Thanks
Al

Hey Al,
This site may add some confusion regarding M4A3's in British service.
I puts forward that U.S. M4A3's were converted to Fireflys for use in Italy.
Very interesting...... !!
Cheers

I'm in. My first campaign, and I'm going with Tasca's Sherman VC firefly 'Carole' set sometime before D-Day when there is good reference material available.
Some comments/questions on vehicle stowage.
1) On the left-hand side of the first picture here http://www.archertransfers.com/AR35172pix.html there is an ammunition box. Based on the lack of such boxes shown on photographs here http://www.network54.com/Forum/47208/message/1167036218/A+Review+of+Stowage+Patterns+on+the+glacis+of+27+Armd+Bde+Shermans+%28looong%29 I think this box must be stored on the rear of the tank in front, rather than attached to the glacis of Carole. Any thoughts?
2) With the deep wading gear fitted what happened to the fittings (smoke box and towbar)? Where these just left off and brought ashore separately? They cannot easily be identified on the photos shown in the first link above.
3) I had not spotted this before but the rear stowage includes a basic type of drawbar. Other examples are shown on the front of other Shermans seen in link 2 above. I think I will need to scratchbuild this, but are these available commercially?

Morning all!
I'm narrowing my choices down. At this moment I'm thinking a U.S. Army Sherman in NW France in summer of '44. Either:
DML M4, 37th Tank Battalion "Thunderbolt V"
Tasca M4A1(75) late 67th Armored Regiment
or possibly Tamiya M4 70th Tank Battalion Utah Beach
This would be sort of a "battle pair" to go with the Dragon Panther A I plan to build. What do you all think?
Mike

Have a look at resicast British Tank accessory sets. I think the tow bar is in this set that I reviewed. If not look at the other reviews of resicast you should find anything you need there.

Well - I got my latest order from Sprue Brothers and it included Dragon's kit 6188 - Red Army M4A2.
so that's what I'll be building for my first Sherman.
Out of the box... slim chance of buying some aftermarket tacks but I'm entering an OOB kick after my current Black Window build is done.

Andrew,
The ammo box you mentioned is indeed welded to the rear of the tank in front. The big stowage box on the glacis (with the LCT markings) was temporarily relocated from the rear to make room for the wading trunk. I'd assume anything else that had to be removed for the wading gear would be lashed to the tank somewhere rather than transported separately - that way it wouldn't get lost.

Thanks for the link. I've got one of Resicast's other tank accessory kits but it had not occured to me to check out the rest of the range. The end connection looks a little different but this is what I need. A close inspection of the photograph of the other side of the tank does appear to show the connecting link on the drawbar.
Tom
That was what I thought. My only concern about the ammunition box was whether there was enough space to fix it between the wading trunk and the edge of the tank, but I have now found some photographs of other Shermans showing the base of the wading trunk and it is clear there is enough space to fit a box.

Hey Paul, I have a request. Finances won't stretch to buying a set of DS tracks at the minute, and the DS tracks I thought I could rob from my Sherman III are the wrong type
This means I'm going to have to use the kit-supplied individual links.....3 parts each.....78 both sides.......
Do you think it would be OK if I started on the tracks now? I just want to do a handful every modelling session I have, so as to make the job much less onerous when I start for real. Even doing 3 a day will take me 6 months to do them all....

Paul, you are going to need a couple of assistants to help with the volume and keep you sane. I picked mine early for the campaigns that I have running and coming up. Good luck with this campaign, it will be a busy one with the subject. I cannot wait to tear into my kit and after market parts, all this and school also

Hey Bob !
I think we're all in this together
If we all pitch in and give advice and help each other this will be an awesome campaign.
I'd love to see:
Regular posts from each campaigner, with tips for others, constructuve criticism, and updates of personal progress.
Lots of pics will be great, and all sorts of questions are MOST welcome !
This will be soooo much fun
GO THE SHERMIES !!
