Hi Darren,

I think I've got it as "done" as possible - the main thing missing is some grass, but it may be a while before I can get out to procure something from the local train shop. However, I did make the "concrete" strips and the little stone with name plaque! Still on the hunt for tourist figures...

It's as faithful a copy of the real one as I could make it - even down to the paint peeling off the rubber tyres. Given that they are removing so much from APG to other sites, I wonder if it is still there?

Thanks for the campaign - now where'd I leave that King Tiger?...

Very nice work Tom and a very original choice for a display model.

@barkingdigger Tom,

A very unusual and creative concept that you've come up with and the results look great!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I spent an afternoon practising with my airbrush prior to trying to spray my Panther camo to as close as possible to match the vehicle on the box top.

Whilst not perfect, I think that I got things in the proverbial "ballpark." As the box image shows, the crew did what appears to be a hasty and less then uniform job. Here's a few images of my rendition as it currently stands.

The colours on mine are still a bit bold in areas but I intend to tone them down with a "dusting" or two of a lightened coat of the base sand colour.

Cheers,
Jan

Thanks guys! I like doing oddballs...

(My KT for the King campaign will be Bovington's "porsche" turreted beast, exactly as preserved. Should stand out in a crowd!)

Tom don't forget there are no hatches on the KT at Bovington and the cupola is also missing.

Today seems to be a successful update day. I took a suggestion made to me and decided to practice with some glaze/filter/wash (whatever?) and tested the effect on some cardboard. It looked pretty promising so I tried it on the tank. I used two separate types based first on a colour called Mud-Stone and the second with Buff at the proportion of about 5% paint and 95 % thinner.

It still needs some touch ups and then I'll start the details followed by the decals and final weathering.

Cheers,
Jan

Ooops, I haven't been on this campaign thread since the scheduled end and as I wasn't able to finish my build due to domestic pressures and problems I thought that was that, now I discover that there is an extension...superb, I have 9 days to get my Panther finished. I reckon I can do it, just wish I had kept up to date with the thread. Better get cracking and crank up the airbrush for the final paint job.

Thanks for the chance to finish, all the best,

Paul

Guys it has been a long campaign and while I had not intended to extend the deadline I am glad that it has provided the opportunity for some to add more great models to those that are already finished. Jan, Bob, and Paul come on get it together you can finish.

@CMOT - Darren,

Roger, WILCO, Message Understood and again, the extension was much appreciated.

-------------------------------------

At this point there is only one part remaining to add to the Panther and that is the jack operating handle. All other parts (towing shackles, jack, rear night driving light...) are now in place.

I tidied up a few areas that needed some attention and coated areas with a mixture of Future with Tamiya X-21 Flat Base that would receive decals. I've used this mixture before and it creates a semi-gloss base for the decals while making them invisible after a second coat is applied. Decals are now all on and I should now be able to proceed to detailing and weathering.

Just one note of warning to prospective builders. If you choose a marking scheme that uses the large turret numbers, be prepared to take some time and a lot of coats of MicroSet to get them to snuggle down around the side pistol ports.

Cheers,
Jan

Thanks Jesper!

I added the spare tracks and the pins and am going to call this done.

Cheers Rob.

PS, I will get some better pics and post to the gallery.

@SGTJKJ

Thanks Jesper, glad that you like this diminutive Panther.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The last part(s) and all decals are on (and sealed) and the actual build part is over, as far as I'm concerned. I've applied a couple of initial matt varnish coats, completed painting all the tools and started accenting (highlights, shadows) on a number of parts. Obviously there is still more weathering to do and toning down of the decals. After that, one more matt coating and getting the pictures in the gallery.

Thanks Darren and John. This is truly a departure from my past finishing techniques and why it's taking soooo long. Anyway, I am very close (about 95+%) there and it should be ready by tomorrow afternoon my time (GMT-5). Here's where it is at this posting.

Obviously the base won't be ready but the Panther should be ready to upload to the gallery.

Okay, I am calling this Panther pretty much done and have uploaded image to the campaign gallery. I'm not 100% happy with the results and I still need to create a suitable ground cover on it. Once that is done, I'll see about touching up a few points in the future. Here's a few extra pictures of the diminutive cat:

Thank you Darren very much for running this campaign and for the extension. As with each campaign and build, I've learned a lot. With all the great work done here, I hope to perhaps see a Panther Campaign feature at some point in the future.

Cheers,
Jan

Well it looks like even with the extension I didn't finish. Was sick for a while and had other obligations. I had fun and learned lots of stuff. This was my first time building a "real" model tank in about 30 years and my first time ever using PE. Darren, thanks for a great campaign!! and thanks everyone for the encouragement and comments. I will have more of this build out on the forum and when its done try another campaign.

This is where I managed to get to:

Dragon-Panther 1945 MNH - 22

Happy building everyone

As I said I have closed the Campaign and awarded ribbons but I will do what I can for anyone who enlisted and gets a finished model picture in here and in the campaign gallery by the 28-02-2013. I think Armorama takes up enough of my time without running campaigns, but thanks I think.
