Ok. Guys, I have a question. I bought T-62 ERA mod 62, but I'd like to build just plain T-62. I want it to have Prague Spring camo (and all those delightful grafiti people painted on them). Is there some differences I should be aware of? Besides obvious ERA blocks, rangefinder and side skirts. Some details, like... I don't know, mantlet shape, engine deck... It seems I suck at finding stuff on internet...

Do you mean you fill the space with the adhesive to kind of form a solid transparent 'mass' in the hole?
James, yes that's right, although in this case I will have to glue a piece of plastic card to the underside of the periscopes so that the epoxy adhesive doesn't simply run away. The beauty of the method is that with practice because of the surface tension in the adhesive you can achieve a slightly convex finish for lamp lenses, just like the real thing. I'm not sure how this will work with the periscope vision blocks that I'm planning to do because obviously in this particular case a level surface is the aim, but I will try a couple of mock ups first. Thanks for the tip regarding the Tamiya clear paint, if I use a combination of a silver base coat then some Tamiya clear before dropping the adhesive in then hopefully I'll get the effect I want. What colour the Tamiya clear though green or blue?
Paul, thanks for the pictures showing the tissue method for replicating a torn canvass effect, definitely something I will use (after a bit of practising first of course!)
Have started painting the wheels and lower hull, hope to post some pictures soon.
Happy tanking everyone!

Hey guys, nice work!
Chris, great to see you go for a T-54, will love to see how it turns out.
Paul, interesting point about the fume extractor, as you would expect some holes for venting, however, not sure how relevant the centurion system would be to the soviet barrel?
In Concords 'After The Storm - Iraqi Wrecks And Fortifications' there is a photo of an Iraqi T-55/59/69 (can't remember exactly) wreck without the fume extractor (and given the pic I think was the influence for Mig's barrel). I'll have to double check but I don't remember any holes being present on this.
James, cheers mate, happy to deal with my current stash without taking on more kits that require a lot of work first!!!
Jon, interesting, what product do you use? Lamp lenses would indeed be a very useful technique for this method (I hate trying to glue clear plastic parts cleanly). Perhaps you can apply in two stages, so you can try an work around any convex finish with a second application to the edges?
Yes the Tamiya clear range has it's uses, the smoke colour is great for fuel/oil stains too. I'd suggest to check more references but a green may be more the way to go. Straight from the bottle it can look way too bright so I'd recommend thinning it and adding a bit of smoke to dull the colour first.
Good luck mate,
James

Zaaphod you can make a slick T-62M with the kit you have. But you ar going to running to a major problem if you want t build a standard model 1962. The ERA kit comes with the newer gunner's site for controlling the guided missile and stead of the earlier gunners site. Also another difference between the two kits is the engine deck. The model 1962 comes with the early 62 style deck. The ERA kit comes with the model 1972 style deck with the folding hatch covers.
Here is the turret for the Model 1962. G8 is the TSh-2B-41 gunner’s sight
The turret for the ERA kit. X1 is the TShSM-41U gunner’s sight
Model 1962 style deck
Model 1972 style deck
The kit just won't work the 1968 prague uprising.

The build part of my Rebel T-55 is now completed!
Progress and a 'photo shoot' of the unpainted kit are posted on my BLOG.
Cheers!

Jamesite your t-55 turned out stunning. Can't wait to see paint on it. I'm also going Syrian with my build, but from the 1982 Lebanese civil war.

Mike,
It looks like there is a password on the photos.
Jon,
For your periscopes you could try wrapping tape tightly around the openings and adding the epoxy from the inside with the part upside-down, that should give a flat surface.
Cheers Rob.

Slow going as real life seems to be getting in my way at the moment. However a week of filling, shaping and filling again has produced the mantlet. Its quite a complicated shape so I treated it as a mini-kit and built 6 sub-assemblies.I used Games Workshop ready mixed filler which is slow to dry to shapes and glues fine when dry.

hope it's not late
Mike I don't know what is going on with your pics. Why don't you try Flickr, it's simple from there and you get Terabyte of saving space and it's free. If you get some pics up there I'll talk you through loading them in here
Mecanix that looks fantastic, I am really looking forward to seeing that beast done

Wow, that was brilliant, thank you! Very well then, ERA it is.
I am not trusting my skills enough to alter engine deck and so.
Once again, thanks a lot for intel

Hey, that is company from my home town
I used to dick around that complex (or at least the unrestricted part) as a kid. My parents worked there, on developement of self proppeled 155 mm howitzer "Zuzana". On Labours day they took me for a tour there, even to a underground part of facility.
Oh, the memories

Hi everyone, another question I'm afraid, hope some of you knowledgeable chaps (or chapesses) might be able to help.
I'm nearly at the point of putting some paint onto the Type 69's side-skirts. I want to use the hairspray technique (or should I say the AK Interactive technique!) but am not sure what base colour I should be using. Are they (the skirts) made of a rubber composite? I have some pictures from the Musée des Blindés which seem to suggest this is the case:
Thoughts please?
Oh and many thanks in advance of course!

Jon the side skirts are made from rubber. Can't speak for Chinese version, but Russian are black in color, so i'm going to guess the type would be of the same color.

wonderful work going on... am thinking I might have to attack my trumpeter T54B next... The T62 is now primed for 4B0... I hope to lay down the green over the weekend when I get back to the airbrush... Here are some pics taken with a proper camera (lighting could be better).
Quite like the last one... Looks a bit like one of those Soviet war memorials with a tank on a plinth...

Mike,
Go to the album that has the picture you want, then click on the photo, then next to the linked thumbnail will be a picture frame with link very small, click on that then copy and post the new link that is created.
Hope that helps.
Cheers Rob.

Hi Gents,
Mechanix, Nice scratch work! Certainly continuing to impress with this build!
Paul, nice link, thanks. I checked the Concord book I mentioned last night and actually found a few with the fume extractors missing. The best one is a colour pic and does indeed show the row of holes you have in the link. I will have to remember do drill these out with a pin vice but had already masked the area for painting to begin. Remind me when the tape comes off if you can!
Jon, definately these would have started life as black rubber like conveyor belt matting. May I suggest Tamiya's Nato black as a good base colour (ie. very dark grey not black).
Cheers,
James
