Distraction: Greta's Revenge

The Ruin and Ground Works

Here came my second problem and also the second challenge. As I wanted to make the costs of my dio as low as possible I came up with the idea to make my building and sidewalk and street myself. How you ask? I give you the answer: STYROFOAM. Styrofoam is foam with a very high density and is sold in different colors and also in different densities. You can get it at the DIY and hardware stores because it is used in isolation of roofs. You can also ask garage holders and carpenters because the garage holder gets his car bumpers delivered in it and the carpenter gets his prefab window and doorframes delivered in it. I also have heard people using food trays but I’ve never tried that so I can’t tell you much about that. These are just a couple of places where you can find the material that I use. My foam comes from the hospital and my father gave it to me in the hospital they use it to cut out molds for artificial knees. Back to the advantages of the Foam... It’s very dense Foam, easy to cut (windows, doors etc.) sanding and filing is peanuts and one of the coolest things is that you can scribe in every detail with a pen. Yeah you heard it correctly an ordinary pen.

So I cut out two plates of foam about 1 cm. thick (I got this measurements from an old Verlinden building) then draw the lines where I wanted the building to be crumbled off. I scribe in the place where I wanted my window to be cut out. Next step is cut everything out the way you want the result of my building (fig. 7, 8, 9) And I scribed in the places where the plaster had come off and the brick is visible. I also used putty to get rid of the part where the two walls come together (inside and outside) the window frame was made with matchsticks and ice-cream sticks (fig. 10) painted in a brown color and then cut with an x-acto blade along the edges to simulate damaging that occurred during the collapse of the walls

The same way I made the sidewalks and the cobblestone street (fig. 11) An important note is that if you glue the foam be sure that you are not using CA glue as it eats foam. I’m not kidding the foam starts to melt and what you get is jelly substance that won’t make you happy. For gluing foam white glue will do. Now the building is ready for the paintjob.

A nice walk down memory lane. I remember this group build like it was last week. It was cool to read the last paragraph on how it was "the best 2 months on the internet" ... have to agree ... modelling was such a buzz at that time, for me as well. Nice one Robert.
