The Bier Garten-1934

The Scene:

I was in one of my favorite modeling hangouts several months ago – looking over the selection of 1:35 scale figures when I happened across an unusual rendition of Hitler.  Just the week before I had purchased one of the new VLS kits “Bavarian House” and thought the two would make a fine pairing with a little modification.

The Bavarian House is intended to be “part 1” of a two-kit offering from VLS (www.modelmecca.com).  Together they make a fine piece, but a little larger than I had room for in my office.  The kit I had was designed to have an open walled area that mated with the second kit.  As my intentions were a smaller little tavern, I had to overcome the gapping hole on the back of the kit by fabricating a duplicate of the first and second floor walls.  Fortunately, beam and plaster is rather simple to mock so within a day or so I had made the master duplicates and carved in the missing details to create the needed wall sections. As the little pub appeared a bit two small for a local gathering place, I also built an additional storage room extension to the back of the building.

The plaster kit was first glued together using my favorite glue for this task (Fabritac™), and seams were then gap-filled with common household Spackle paste.  I sanded down the dried Spackle and primed the building with flat white from Tamiya’s selection of spray can paints.  After this was completely dry, I came back with a sharp Xacto™ blade to reinforce the wood grain detail of the beams.

Very nice job. I really like the complete story you have embraced with one simple figure. Well done. I like the base and how it echos the strong stone feel of the patio. Well done.

Sorry the photos came out so "grainy"... i did the opening shot in a B/W Grain effect on purpose, to make it look like a documentary photo, but did a terrible job on the rest.... thanks to TinCan for doing a nice salvage job with what little I gave him to work with... but ... just today i went out a bought a new 4MegPix Kodak camera... better photos are coming! Thanks TinCan!

Keith, GREAT work. Just one thing, by 1934 Hitler was already in power and had also managed to purge any rivals (the SA). He certainly would not have been hanging around Bavarian Biergartens by this point. Maybe it would have been better to have titled it "Der Bier Garten 1924" (or maybe 1928). Just some anachronistic insight.
