The Bier Garten-1934

The Details:

Before putting the figure in place, I wanted to complete the actual setting.  First, I added bent brass ship railings to represent decorative balcony treatments on the front of the tavern. These were painted white.  To the side windows, I created flower boxes from wood strip for each window, and added in tufts of Woodland Scenics green lichen to give the appearance of shrubbery.  Using a 10/0 brush, I then touched high points on the lichen to give a similance of yellow and red flowers to the boxes.

A small table was added outside on the street, and a cabbage and handful of carrots were made from Miliput putty and set on top.  I was going to have an old woman selling from the table, but then decided not, as she would detract from the visage of Hitler alone in the limelight.

A wooden fence was built and glued to the rear sides of the building, created from coffee-stir sticks, compliments of my local Starbuck’s.  I used a sharp needle to press in “nail holes” in the wood.  Once painted, I applied terra cotta streaks to indicate rust marks emanating from the common iron nails used for such work.  Likewise, I added in a stovepipe to both the second floor rear wall and the roof area of the shed, and applied the same terra cotta streaks for more rust stains.

In the rear yard of the building by the shed, I added in a red hand-operated water pump (another dollhouse accessory!).  A garbage pail was set beside the fence, and a few boxes were placed near the front of the tavern.  Finish everything with a stool and empty beer barrel for good measure.

Very nice job. I really like the complete story you have embraced with one simple figure. Well done. I like the base and how it echos the strong stone feel of the patio. Well done.

Sorry the photos came out so "grainy"... i did the opening shot in a B/W Grain effect on purpose, to make it look like a documentary photo, but did a terrible job on the rest.... thanks to TinCan for doing a nice salvage job with what little I gave him to work with... but ... just today i went out a bought a new 4MegPix Kodak camera... better photos are coming! Thanks TinCan!

Keith, GREAT work. Just one thing, by 1934 Hitler was already in power and had also managed to purge any rivals (the SA). He certainly would not have been hanging around Bavarian Biergartens by this point. Maybe it would have been better to have titled it "Der Bier Garten 1924" (or maybe 1928). Just some anachronistic insight.
