The Bier Garten-1934

The Figure:

This kit comes from Warriors, and is possibly no longer in production… I’ve seen pictures of the figure, but have never seen it available in any store, or found it to be “in stock” with any website retailer.  It is a wonderfully crisp depiction of Hitler, down to his drawn cheeks and his trademark mustache.  The NAZI party armband is also cast in place, but I had to freehand paint the swastika symbol on the white circle.  I did the entire uniform in acrylics, with enamel for the flesh of his face and hands.  I placed a metal rod in his foot and leg, and then used this to hold the figure while painting.  His uniform was first base-coated in a dark tan and then mid-tones and highlights were added in by the addition of white paint to the base coat color.  Once the figure was completely dry, I drilled a hole with a pin vise drill into the plaster base, and then glued the metal rod extending from the foot of the figure into the hole.  As this piece was to be added to my private collection, I glued felt “feet” to the corners and center of the plaster base bottom so it wouldn’t scratch my bookcase shelf.

Done:

Total time was about 20 hour of total work and the estimated cost of the materials including the kit and accessories would be approximately $70. Much of the work was scratch built (table, shutters, signage, fence, storage room, etc.) so the actual impact looks to be far more expensive than it actually was.

Very nice job. I really like the complete story you have embraced with one simple figure. Well done. I like the base and how it echos the strong stone feel of the patio. Well done.

Sorry the photos came out so "grainy"... i did the opening shot in a B/W Grain effect on purpose, to make it look like a documentary photo, but did a terrible job on the rest.... thanks to TinCan for doing a nice salvage job with what little I gave him to work with... but ... just today i went out a bought a new 4MegPix Kodak camera... better photos are coming! Thanks TinCan!

Keith, GREAT work. Just one thing, by 1934 Hitler was already in power and had also managed to purge any rivals (the SA). He certainly would not have been hanging around Bavarian Biergartens by this point. Maybe it would have been better to have titled it "Der Bier Garten 1924" (or maybe 1928). Just some anachronistic insight.
