Step 2 : Drawing the panels
|
The second thing to do is to draw the panels on the base
of the door. This makes it very easy to glue the planks in place at
a later time. This also gives a good visual impresion of how the door
will be when it's finished.
I'm a modeler who's got to see what the result will be in the end. I
hate building things and then finding out I worked with the wrong sizes,
colours or whatever. Therefore I always draw lines on my doors and put
figures next to it, to see if the overall looks fits the image I got
in my head.

Step 3 : Make a vertical plank
|
Now we have a door that fits our needs, and we continue
our build. The next step is to make one of the vertical planks. Cut or
saw a plank in the desired size.
For the planks (and panels too) I use balsa wood. Balsa wood is very soft
and very, very easy to cut, sand, file or whatever. I decided to use balsa
for the planks and that comes in very handy now...why... I'll tell you
: we are going to glue the Balsa plank on the Abachi base. Since Abachi
is quite a bit harder than Balsa it is very easy to sand the balsa until
it is the exact size of the base. Sand it after you have glued the Balsa
onto the Abachi base. Do this very gently, because Balsa really is a very
soft material...you sand off too much within no time.
Glueing Balsa can be a drag when you don't have the
right glue. I use glue that is manufactured by "UHU". UHU attached
the name "HART" to this glue . I feel this is a very good and
easy to use glue. The biggest advantage....it dries very fast...just two
or three minutes at a room's temperature and it's ok to move on.
When you glue Balsa, always glue both items that got to be glued together.
In our case put glue on both the base and the plank. Let them dry completely
(with the "hart" glue this takes only one to two minutes). Now
put glue again on either the base or the plank and press the items firmly
together. Within a minute the items bond.

I started modeling at the age of 10. When I was 22 my work forced me to quit the hobby until I returned to the modeling frontline at the age of 36.
Nowadays I model dioramas, but in the land of modeling I admire the figure painters.... so skilled and most of them are great guys too....
