Never Abandoned

After I gave the base colors a few days to dry I airbrushed Future onto the model and applied oil washes of Raw Umber and Burnt Sienna to the building. I added some highlights and detailing to the stonework my applying various grays and Titanium White oils using a sea sponge and hand brushing. I then added more weathering with Mig pigments to enhance the colored walls and make them more visually interesting. The overpainting of the random stone colors with grays blended the hues together to create some unity in the building's appearance.

Now that much of the painting had been accomplished on the MiniArt model I built the wood interior elements from Balsa found at my hobby store. The wood was weathered with diluted oil paints and highlighted with very light drybrushing of tans and white.

Before going any further with the building I started construction of the groundwork. For this I used two techniques to see how each worked and to review the benefits of each method. I made a frame from oak panelling and stained it with Miniwax sealer. I added a plywood bottom and bulked it up with R75 insulation board. I then cut a corkboard into the sidewalk shape and glued it in place.
(Photo 15)

This was my first time working with cork so the two methods I will refer to are scribing and blocks. On the large upper surface (the sidewalk) I "scribed" the grout lines using a rounded needle file. For the lower cobblestone portion I built individual cork blocks.
(Photos 16 & 17)

I glued the cobblestone blocks down using carpenter's white glue and then distressed the sidewalk and roadway with various shaped needle files. I then grouted the whole surface with fine grade spackle which I let dry for a few minutes and then wiped the top surfaces clean of grout using a clean, damp clothe.

first time i built a model it was a hot rod and i was five year old. i painted it using blue nail polish and it was the best model i had made yet (given it was my first it wasn't that impressive). but i have tried to keep that feeling for over 40 years, each model i finish gives me the gratification...

Bruce, Exceptionally great piece of work! Well thought out. Nice composition and detail. Freedom has a price that is paid with the sacrifice of so many lives in so many ways. We must never forget all those around the world that fought for freedom then or now especially those that have ultimately paid with their lives. You've captured just such a moment in time. -Eddy
