The base
The base is a custom one made by "The Show Case Company" in the United Kingdom. They can be found at most model shows. The base was edged with balsa wood strip to create an area to work in. The raised areas were created using polystyrene tiles before the buildings and gate pillars were added and attached with good old PVA (white) glue. The railroad rails where created using plastic 'H' strip, balsa wood ties, and tie downs from PECO model railroad supplies. This was cheaper than using resin Dragon parts and looked a lot better. These again where glued in place using PVA glue.
The cobblestone areas were created by using Lentils stuck to the base with double sided sticky tape then covered with a interior plaster mix.
The raised areas were covered in the plaster mix before applying a covering of sand and static grass. The rails had railroad ballast sprinkled over them. This was allowed to drift and fall randomly over the base to give a more natural feel. The rest of the base was covered in plaster and then fine sand.
The trees were made from sea foam material covered in parsley. These were glued to the base using PVA. The moss came from a model railroad shop and was just glued to the base. Once I was happy with the overall layout the whole base was given a coat of grey primer followed by matte black in my usual style. The base was then painted using Tamiya acrylics before an application of a sepia oil paint wash helped blend it all together. Dry-brushing was done with Humbrol enamels once the wash had dried. Humbrol enamels were also used to pick out the fine detail followed by a light brushing of fine pastels.
