Coming in out of the Cold

  • move
One of my favorite things to build is the infamous Pz.Kpfw.IV and some of the variants of this workhorse of a tank. So, when a few different items come together and the rusty wheel inside my head starts to spin, an idea sometimes pops out: a project is born. This time three items presented themselves. First, of course, was Dragon’s Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.H w/Schurzen. This is a new kit from their 1:72 Armor Pro Series. Secondly, Reality in Scale’s Dutch Farm Stable, again in 1:72 scale, dropped onto my bench. And finally something that touches an area of modeling I have not done before: working with snow effect. The third item is Precision Ice and Snow. This is a new product to hit the modeling world and has some very promising results.

As I work my way through this project I will try to give a review of each of the three components and show some of the progress of the build along the way. First up on the bench will be the, yup, you guessed it…the Pz.Kpfw.IV! I will give a brief review of the kit as part of this article. I hope it helps if and when considering purchasing the kit.

Part One: The Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.H w/Schurzen
As I mentioned above, I will be using the Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.H w/Schurzen from Dragon Models: kit no. 7497. This kit is part of their Armor Pro series and is in the 1/72 scale. There are 141 individual parts, decals and of course the instructions. The part layout is as follows:

Contents

  • 1 – Light grey styrene lower hull section
  • 10 – Light grey styrene sprue trees
  • 1 – Bag with 20 light grey styrene road wheel center caps
  • 1 – Set of Dragon DS tracks
  • 1 – Decal Sheet
  • 1 – Instruction booklet

I am building what I like, when I like and how I like it; having fun doing it. I have been building and finishing models on and off my whole life but the past ten years things really exploded. Just about anything goes when it comes to hitting the bench, but wrecked armor, rusted hulks, ships or ...

AL - Thank you Sir! The Ice and Snow is a really neat product. I think I am just touching the surface on what can be done. "Directional" applications, working with clear resin and silicone to create ice effects...I think I have some playing around to do!! Jeff - Thanks buddy!! LOL...does it show that braille is not my forte'?? Big fun! The Panzer fell together! I am sure there will be more little builds in my future!!
