I wonder if anybody has ever thought of writing a reference book on Canadian armour, concentrating on post WW2 and modern? Just a thought, with all the knowledge we have just on this site,......

Sure it's been thought about and even attempted.....but you need a publisher that is willing to step up and produce a quality reference book......and make it worth your while as far as payment....Concord and Osprey have both been approached by multiple modellers about Canadian subjects and they have either been told it wouldn't sell, the publishers were taking a different direction for their books, or the book project was shelved.

Yea, I've got it, its "Osprey : New Vanguard 16 : Leopard 1 Main Battle Tank, 1965 - 1995" , that's what I meant.

All of the Canadian Leopard C1 photos in that book were taken in Germany......note that the Leopards have the MILES gear velcro on the turret.....only the C1s in Germany had the velcro fitted....it was removed prior to them returning to Canada.

I served on the Leopards with the two crewman whose faces are visible (one loading ammo and the other ground guiding the tank) in the two photos on page 23.

I'd advise against photocopying books and then selling them for profit. I reckon the site admins won't take kindly to their forums being used for that purpose.

Yep, better read that fine print on the inside cover of your book. Since these books are usually under $20, maybe buy it, support Osprey (an advertiser on this site btw) and its authors. Certainly don't advertise the fact that you'll copy it for a profit - 'nuff said.

It's a pretty good book on the Leopard 1.....but for the four photos and one colour plate of Canadian Leopard C1s you can decide whether to get it or not for a Canadian Leopard C1 reference...I did.

Service Publications (a Canadian Publisher) has "The Leopard in Canadian Serivce" for $9.95 Canadian.....not the greatest book on the Canadian Leopard....but the text is good and the B&W photos (mainly DND photo) show the Leopards in the field.

A few new books by Service Publications in preparation.....The Iltis in Canadian Service, The M-38A1 Jeep in Canadian Service, and The Ferret in Canadian Service should be excellent inexpensive additions.

And of course....you can always just ask well thought out precise and concise questions or requests for particular images.....here.....or the very highly recommended Modern Canadian Vehicles site.

You'd think in todays modern digital age, getting a book printed, assembled & printed off could be fairly doable, especially if it's kept to "Cottage Business" size. Maybe even just an "electronic" pdf book.... hmmm, this is something I'm going to look into

I have the book, I've just scanned it onto my computer for reference or for reading when bored. I have my entire Osprey library on my comp. So I am buying them and supporting Osprey. I was just trying to help out a fellow modeller.

Andrew,

Good luck with your C1

You make it sound like you're having difficulties, or are finding it impossible to build yours. Sorry to hear about that. Post some in progress pics of your build (especially to the Modern Cdn Vehs DG), showing what has you high-centred, and I'm sure some suggestions will be made.

I'm still waiting for some extra parts for mine.

I'm sorry to hear that - I had no idea that you were missing any parts, since you've not contacted me to identify which parts you are missing. In your case IIRC, I'd forgotten to include MLM2010 (AMU's) in with your order, but noticed this and sent them out with a day or two - this was back on 15 Aug 07. I don't recall any comment from you since then about missing parts, so I could only assume that everything was fine with your order. Doing all the packaging myself, sometimes I make a packaging error and miss a part, or add an additional part. Most folks who are missing parts will contact the company to give them a chance to send out what's required, rather than moaning about it first in a public forum.

I wonder if anyone told JP you can't really build a true late C1 with the MLM C1 Late kit ? It's missing the MEXAS mounts and the rear turret bustle, so technically it's a 'Mid' C1.

I think Jason has covered this very well, but I do have comments concerning 'Late' C1's:

The large cage turret bustle was provided as a seperate item in order to provide modellers with the flexibility to buy only what they required in order to model the particular vehicle they had the references for. Many modellers want to build a C1 as used in the latter years in Germany, not requiring the turret bustle or MEXAS mounts (which are dirt simple to scratch, are they not?), and MLM1022 allows them to do so without any additions. I can appreciate the pedanticism of 'Late C1' vs 'Mid C1', especially since the CF has never clearly and formally identified the mods to our vehicles with 'A1 / A2', 'Mk1' or other designations, making then difficult to name accurately. Help us all to technically identify the various versions of Leopard by narrowing down what you call a 'Mid C1'. Which mods would that include? What timeframe? Both in Canada and Germany? Was the mod fleet-wide, a regimental mod, or a testbed vehicle? I've seen C1's with the turret bustle, but no MEXAS mounts on the turret, and the C1's briefly deployed to Bosnia in 1995/96 had MEXAS mounts but no turret bustle...more designations, perhaps? AFAIK, there are no official 'C1A1' or 'C2A1' tanks in the CF either - Unofficial designations used to denote the substantial armour improvement with the MEXAS suite.

Perhaps I (and Paul Fredenburg at Trackjam Models) should've entitled MLM1022 not "Leopard C1(Late)" but "Leopard C1, circa 1987/8-1995/6, CFE-based (until 1992), Pre-MEXAS, Pre-IFOR". Nah! I think I'll stick with the more 'generic' designations which help modellers to understand which is which.

Cheers,
JP

I just figured Leopard C1 Late was the penultimate version, with the title "Leopard C1 Final" being reserved for the type immediately prior to C2 roll-out.

Looks good Rick,

If you want to detail it further before you paint....the anti-slip surfaces on the front fenders...they should actually only be one panel on the C1 and C2....not three like in the kit.

I see a couple of details missing on the mantlet....the Simfire mount and the .50 Cal sub-cal mounts. You could also add the retaining chains to the coax and secondary sight plugs.

Eduard makes a great set .....35753....made for the Tamiya Leopard 1A4...it has everything a Leopard 1 modeller needs.....including the retaining chains and the correct two piece engine air intake grills.

I don't know what your aftermarket "budget" is but if you are building anymore Canadian Leopards....which I would think you will be....then you should really consider getting that PE set.....you can use it on a Leopard C1 and Leopard C2.

Ya I think i'll pick one up for my next one.

I have the Canadian IFOR/SFOR dry transfers from Archer, can these be used on this C1?

Googled the web but couldn't find any good pics of our C1's that were deployed in 96.

As JP stated in his post on January 27th.......the two Leopard C1s deployed to Bosnia had the MEXAS mounts added to the hull and turret.

The two C1s in Bosnia were with IFOR and had a mine plow and a mine roller with them.

Your C1 is not correct for the IFOR deployed tanks.....no MEXAS mounts and the tow cables would also have to be moved back and crisscrossed at the rear hull.

You can finish yours as Germany deployed with the 8CH or in Canada with the Armoured School, LdSH(RC), RCD, or 12 RBC.

Well Troops,

Just returned from Afghanistan and have decided to finish all my kits that are waiting labour before starting a new build.

So today was the first day that I have had time at the workbench and have very reluctantly started on the Hong Kong Creation Workshop tracks

Hopefully will get them all cut off the sprues today

Welcome home Rick!

My first choice of kits on post-depl leave would not be a set of tracks though! (actually, my wife made me build a deck and fence, and by the time those were done, I had to be back at work!)

Thanks Graeme,

That's one advantage of coming home in the winter, outdoors stuff has to wait
