Why did you feel you had to buy from the States? If you're in England, there are many retailers who could have sold you Verlinden figures at a MUCH lower shipping cost...

Hi
Too late now I know, but next time you are looking to buy something post on here what you are looking to get and ask for recommendations or sources to have the item/s you want.
You can still "do your own thing" but at least you have some options to work with.
That sort of question is always welcomed on the forums.

Sorry to hear your woe Jimmy, but it seems that with oil toppin 107.00USD a barrel, shipping rates have more than trebled since Christmas( one of the guards I work with is also a USPS employee, & he can't believe the costs he's observed...).
Out of curiosity-do any of the companies you've ordered from offer "Small Surface Packet" as an option? It takes a while(up to 8 weeks) but I shipped a 5lb. parcel to a young lady in the Phillipines (Modelling supplies gents-minds out of the gutter) for just over 5.00USD not too long ago. Worth a look if you're not in a hurry...

As far as I know, there is no surface option available today between the States and Europe. That was made redundant last year some time.
I think Id rather pay the £23 anyway, than wait for 8 weeks delivery!

Postage charges from the States have gone plain bloody stupid this past year or so, with many sellers taking the proverbial in a major way.
And despite the excuses that are sometimes trotted out, it's NOT all down to the low Dollar / high oil price at all. A lot of it is just plain profiteering.
"Handling" is the other rip-off excuse - they claim that it costs more for them to "handle" a parcel destined for outside the USA. Personally, I fail to see how - aside from using a tiny fraction more ink to write the name of a destination country.
One joker on eBay the other week wanted $33 shipping and "handling" to post a T-shirt to Germany!!! I told him he could keep it, and it would serve him right if it doesn't sell.
A few years ago I used to buy a lot of stuff online from the US. But what with all the postage piss-takers and German customs (read: state-sponsored highway robbers) having far sharper pencils than they used to, it's got to the stage now where I only buy from US sellers as an absolute last resort.

having shipped a few things lately, I can attest that shipping prices in America have gone through the roof.
but still, $23 for some figures to the UK is truly ridiculous.

my confidence for buying anything other than the odd dragon model at the local has gone totally.
how are people supposed to afford this pretty damn good hoppy when there are people trying to put you out of pocket with some bloody stupid shipping charges!!
its not like the figures were life size lead models

Having shipped a lot of items (light and heavy) to Europe I can attest that $15 to $25 is pretty much the going rate via the US Postal Service. If you ship UPS or FedEx... forget it... $35-$80.
So considering you paid £12 to my $23 I wouldn't complain.

Robert,
Thank god they did. Who wants to wait 4-8 weeks for delivery for a few measily dollars less. It was a rip AND they lost more items via this method as well.

Were you not informed of the shipping charge prior to completing your order? All the dealers I have dealt with always provided at least an estimate prior to my confirming and accepting the order.
Did you look for the product locally? I'm not talking only your LHS, but local or European websites? How about Far Eastern sites?
Did you look for alternate products at a lower rate? DML have a British infantry set with similar poses to the resin figures you ordered - with a simple head swap you could have had figures in a similar pose with more to spare.
Did you ask anyone about these figures or ordering from this particular dealer before jumping in head first? There is a wealth of information on these pages and in the heads of these members - use it, or at least take it into consideration!
Yes, shipping is expensive for some at the moment. But that's a relative statement. I don't consider spending 12 or even 23 quid for shipping expensive for something I really want.
If you purchased something blindly before getting all the facts, and considering all the alternatives, I am sorry, but you have only yourself to blame - nobody forced you to buy the figures from that particular dealer or pay a shipping amount which may be beyond your means. Take responsibility for your own actions.

I really think that advice like this is pure 24-Carat.
I'd hate to see younger or less-experienced modelers getting disillusioned because of situations like this - which COULD have been avoided by a simple question in the Forums.

John,
(1)there were no shipping estimates, i looked fairly hard for them,
(2)I have the dragon figures, and for dragon figures i was very dissapointed in them.
(3)i failed to find the figures in a european or u.k database. that is probably as america dominates the internet.
(4)For a first time buyer for online kits of course i was going to be blissfully ignorant of such extortionate shipping. even if it is the going rate for u.s.p.s bescause frankly, with the revenue most major organizations could probably afford to drop the charges by half at most.
(5)
to sum it up. at the end of the day, through fault of my own or not, i am STILL going to be pretty damn cheesed off
James.

im 18 years old. i am currently jobless, i thought i would trat myself with some rainy day savings, which is not very much anyway. sometimes cost is a problem with a lot of people. i would willingly pay that much if it was the last one. but not for a product which is probably still in production. to top it off. a further £20 (aprox $40) has gone missing from the bank acount in questionI don't consider spending 12 or even 23 quid for shipping expensive for something I really want.

AMEN! Everybody wants their share of the proverbial pie(quite a large share)...and pretty soon a lot of them won't have any pie to share because people won't have the means to pay for merchandise plus pay outrageous shipping and "handling" prices. Buy from the people who take care of you..the customer.. and boycott those that don't!

Hi Jim
No problem, just my inferiority complex kicking in
I agree worth repeating, it's one of the mainstays of this site, the wealth of information available and the number of people prepared to give up time to help and advise fellow modellers.
As said in another post recently regarding Whiners this is one of the best sites for all modellers.
Whilst composed mainly of people serious and passionate about modelling AFV's etc they still manage to advise, help and accommodate those who wish to model well but without such dedication, without being rude or condescending.
