I am trying to improve my ability to handle small items. Currently building the Dragon 234 which is loaded with them. I have a large swing magnification lens containing a small bulb to provide light. It works fine for most of the items, but I understand others use some sort of dental magnification. Can you let me know what you use and how to get it.
thanks

I find this little beauty to be a life-saver. Couldn't do half the models I've done without it. Don't let the price fool you - it works just fine. Here is a link to where I got mine.

Hi
I currently have one of these,
http://industrial-uk.daylightcompany.com/store/magnifiers/flexilens-on-base-5
which I like because of the frame less design, but you do have to position it well to get good use. I usually work on kits with my wrists resting on the worktop and this about eight to ten inches away from the item I'm working on..
Along with two adjustable desk lights each with 60 watt lights in, left and right of it.
But I'm also wanting to get these, once I can afford it and tolerate the jibes I'll get from the wife and kids.
http://www.claritas-online.co.uk/products/product_pages/magnifiers/optivisor.html
Although I think I can obtain them a bit cheaper than the price shown. Glass lenses are my reason for this one as opposed to the cheaper ones like this.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Modelcraft-Headband-Magnifier-lenses-triple/dp/B000B8JNZ4
To be honest I couldn't model without the add of something like this now. Well I could but I'd not be happy with the results, especially for painting figures etc.
Cheers
Alan

Thank you for the responses. Does anyone use a "dental" magnifier? I am trying to findf out what that is and how to get one, if it works for small parts.
Mike--that head set looks super. I just ordered one.
thanks again

I use a lighted magnifier also, but for really up close stuff I use plain old reading glasses.I several different pairs each with a different magnification.I love them. They don't bug me like some of the other types do and you can look over the top for normal viewing.Hope this helps somewhat.Good luck!

When I do figures, once in a while I will use my Rudy Project Optilux. Best thing about these glasses are they are custom built for each user. It is only a 2.5 power but I can hold my projects about 18 inches from my face and not have to kiss it.

I think you will find it's these which look to be for very close work and not really suitable for the distance we work at or the size of object we wish to focus on.
If that don't put you off I'd say the price , although I didn't look at that part, will probably get you to stick with what you've ordered

The company name is Optilux. The glasses are professional grade optics for Dentists and Surgeons. The US Govt paid $1300 USD for mine.
The nice thing is, you can flip up the lenses and use the non power/prescription lenses underneath.
Mine also has a 1200(?) candle power light attachment above the nose piece powered by a 9v Li-On
powerpack you can clip to your belt or bicep. Its comparable to a Surefire 6P 65 lumen flashlight.

I've got four or five visors (from the $4 cheapies up to an optivisor), three or four magnifier lamps, some reading type glasses, and so on. 90% of the time the visors are the most convenient, and the rest of the time I use some inexpensive loups (2x, 3x, 5x, 7x, and 10x) I picked up on sale at Harbour Freight for $4 or so. If I had to choose only one, I would go with the most comforatable (this is here the cheapies fall down) visor I could afford.

I have the Optivisor and one of those desk mounted lighted mignifiers. But the tool I use most are the cheapy reading glasses I got from the Dollar Store. I have a couple of different magnifications for different situations. And for a buck a piece, you can't go wrong.

I use these:
Available from here:
PapaJohns Toolbox
Light weight, cheap enough, no tunnel vision, and the frame fits comfortably behind my normal eyeglass frame with no problem.

Wow, are these really necessary? I use "Near Sighted Eyes Mark I" Just lift up my prescribed glasses and suddenly I can see everything up to 30cm with great clarity, heh heh. (Of course I'm not stating the fact that I am blind as a bat without my glasses at normal distances)

Here is what I use, the Bausch and Lomb Magna Visor:
I got it on Amazon for about $35, and use it with the medium distance lenses.
