I don't think DML had Russian subjects for a good while; certainly not gen2 figures. I hope they'll keep going on. (It's good that we are seeing Russian and other Allied figures from other manufacturers as well. Maybe now there would be other than German soldiers present on dioramas. If you look at them, WWII looks like it was a very lonely war indeed, with only the Germans present... )

Fingers crossed that the heads wearing naval headgear are easily replaceable (specially the sniper figure).

A great book on these scouts is "Commandos from the sea", by Y.F. Strekhnin. They also did operations along the Danube river.

Judging by the box art, I'm not sure the figures interact well, but separtely, they look supeb and this a very welcome subject.

I agree with you about the Germans but now there is a much better understanding of Soviet forces in WW2. Alanger make NKVD troops ans cossacks. Zvezda make snipers and soon mountain troops. And Miniart make naval troops. In remember that until recently the only Soviet forces that existed were tank riders. I hope they set will also include the rubber dinghy.

A pleasant suprise. A very useful set. With a little modification the Sniper could be very useful. It will be interesting to see how the sniper camouflage suit is made in plastic and maybe also PE.
As Dilip pointed out I also hope we get the rubber dinghy included in the set.

That's a good idea but that ship is so expensive. I guess DML has not thought of making it in styrene yet.

It's always nice to have a subject that isn't German for a change although, I must say that this set will have a limited audience.

As previously stated before, if there are interchangable/alternative heads either in the box or could be fitted that will improve the scope.

Right, but the actual plastic components in the two Alanger sets is exactly the same. You can put cossack heads on them or NKVD hats. Either way the set is superb quality - they appear to be a plastic knockoff of some of the Tank resin figures. If you replace the heads they can be used as any branch of the Red Army anyway.

I highly, highly recommend the Alanger set, no matter what label they put on it.

I had the same thought.... it will be very interesting to see how the recreate the sniper's gillie suit in plastic (or PE for that matter).

I bought both Alanger sets, which are as you rightly said, one setb with different art box. I did the NKVD men. the quality of moulding is very good and the faces are superb. Both the NKVD and the Cossacks have real heartless expressions. i found them a little "tall" compared to the DML figures. Their weapons especially the LMG could be a little improved . i need a good diorama idea for the NKVD types- maybe guarding german POWs. I have the MB set of german captives.

Damn, Jim, when you said "big" surprise, I thought DML was putting out some 1/16! Oh well, it's still great to see a sniper fig.

Yeah, me too. Is that hope dead in the water then? Even Tamiya haven't put out anything since that Japanese pilot and the MG42 loader.

Unfortunately, it would be safer to assume that it is. You're correct in saying that neither DML not Tamiya are showing any signs of 'expansion'. The only hope is if Trumpeter decide to invest further into THEIR range and go beyond tankcrew. Personally, i'm not sure they will...

I saw your Sri lankan special forces soldier resting on an MD jam bottle lid, so time back. i had not joined at the time. I make figures now as AFV take a lot of space. I used to make tamiya figures a long time ago but used to be quite bad at making them . i have mastered some painting techniques but i do not think I am yet able to exhibit my stuff- though I feel each set is better than the previous one. Are you sri lankan or an expat living here? waht do you make?
